I hope they get the Japanese version. That English dub has not aged well.

Evangelion is one of my all time favorite classic anime. I loved this show and the characters and story and it's message have always meant a lot to me. I thought we would get Evangelion rescued licensed eventually but I didn't expect it to be this soon or that Netflix would get it over Funimation. Evangelion is one of the most important anime in the history of the medium. I'm so excited that the current generation of anime fans who missed out on Eva the first time around will get to experience it for the first time and that long time fans will get a chance to revisit such an important classic. Thank you Netflix for rescue licensing such a masterpiece in animation.

So that's nice and all, but how's about a proper Blu-ray release? Hopefully Netflix getting it doesn't mean the kiss of death for that. Still waiting on Little Witch Academia years later...

The English dub has aged pretty well imo. A version without Greg Ayres as Kaworu is a lesser product.

I hope this is a sign that a BD release for R1 is finally coming.

Maybe in a few years, but not any time soon. Netflix prioritizes streaming for their series, home releases are a complete afterthought done long afterwards.

I guess it depends on the exact rights they have (we know its worldwide streaming at least), but unlike Funimation, Sentai, Aniplex, etc... I don't really know how Netflix works when it comes to that stuff. Some of their exclusive series have gotten home releases through other companies (Fate/Apocrypha being the most recent with Aniplex of America), but there's been no word at all on many of their other series (most notably Little Witch Academia and Devilman Crybaby since the JP blu-ray has been out for a bit).

Evangelion is well-known enough that if Netflix does have those rights, I think there's a higher chance than most of their library.

Neat, but as others have said, BD when?

Hopefully the presentation will be sourced from the Japanese BDs so we can at least get something better than the DVDs.

That reminds me, I wonder if this will be the directors cut or not...

Netflix only obtained the streaming license though. Someone else will have to rescue to the home video license for these old versions. Funimation still has the new movies

Well, holy crap. Eva has never been on a streaming service, so this could really blow things up.

Pretty sure Netflix only gets streaming rights to their anime. Shows like Knights of Sidonia and Seven Deadly Sins have gotten Blu-ray releases from Sentai and FUNimation respectively.

Also glad to see they got End of Eva. That means there is a remote chance on a Blu-ray reissue. Manga Entertainment’s ancient and terrible (even for the time) DVD goes for huge $$$.

At long last. The biggest license rescue news since... probably May 2014?

"Evangelion" is currently trending on US Twitter, of course. Very Happy

Typically, I think they stream every language they can.

As long as they "forget" to include the Spanish dub it's all good.

*shudder*

Figures, when I finally get around to selling my superfluous copy of the DVD set. Very Happy
