I believe when we look at Yo-kai Watch, it was a franchise that should never have launched overseas. Kids outside of Japan would not have understood the humor, despite the games - from what little I tried out - ending up being fun to play (I plan on getting the eventual US release of the remake for the Switch if and when it's announced). Not to mention the toys Hasbro made were trash. Therefore, the universal appeal wasn’t there. This is not about branding, this is about content. Content has always driven the brand. If you don’t have the content, the brand will fail.
