To my understanding Osamu Dezaki really only directed this for money to help treat his cancer (According to Masao Maruyama at a Animazement). It at least got him a little money but besides that it's completely forgettable.

Damn that's... ridiculously depressing. I always wondered why he directed such a weird series near the end of his life

These are both serialized 12 episode shows. Why start with episodes 2 and 11? Laughing
