Thank you for this article, Kennedy. Kowloon Walled City has always been a fascination since the first time I saw it in Bloodsport and later Crime Story. There's so much that's still a mystery of that long-gone city, even thirty years later. For me, it's not so much nostalgia, but it's exploring that mystery and history.

This was very informative!

Though I wonder if part of the reason that the Kowloon in the anime is so idealized is spoiler[because it's a projection of the male leads' memory of it.]

It’s great to see people as fascinated by Kowloon Walled City as I am! I think what makes it so fascinating is that it’s both real and mythical, a place that actually existed but feels surreal, especially when recreated in movies and anime.

I've watched a few Youtube videos about the Walled City before, Zepherus' being the one that I can comfortably "advertise" because the channel is long dead anyway. It's only a 5 minute video and he's VERY casual in his brief description of its history that doesn't go into anywhere near as much detail as this article.

My dad told me that the population outside the Walled City would avoid the area at all costs (for good reason). The community was tight knit but also very hostile to outsiders. The fact someone managed to get inside and document daily life would have been thought impossible.

There was also this video I found that along with shops, there were a lot of back-alley dentists inside as well.

I understand. You've done a great job of evoking the cinematic memories and archaeological value of a legendary land. I truly appreciate your efforts in recreating that cramped, mysterious space as authentically as possible.drift boss Crying or Very sad
