I am about as far from an Atelier expert as you can get, but some of those party members look very familiar...like they were in other titles?

Yes, a bunch of characters are reused from other games.

I like the idea of new characters, but me still wants a direct follow up to Ryza. Those games brought in a lot of new fans, and it feels weird to pivot away so quickly.
