Animation style kind of gives me Panty & Stocking vibes.
Feels like Sunrise is transitioning from the last bastion of 2D Mecha to the forerunner of CG Mecha,.

It felt weird at the beginning but this style works really well with Xabungle. It has a bit of a Gurren Lagann feel.
It's been awhile. I forgot there was a Side R that was supposed to come out.

Gurren Lagann´s first half was a direct riff on Xabungle and confirmed to be one by Hiroyuki Imaishi, so it makes sense to go all Trigger. The 80s original is a mess and can´t support a full 52-episode run (the ending sucks, which isn´t unusual for Tomino) but there are enough good ideas in there to have a second go at it. I would easily prefer a Byston Well and Layzner reboot. Flawed and meddled with productions a decade ahead of their time.

It does look like something directed by Imaishi, despite being a Xabungle short, the color and animation reminded me a bit more of re:Cutey Honey, also directed by Imaishi.
While I'm sad that 2D mecha these days is becoming rarer, these recent Sunrise aniation have been very interesting, and I'm also including the recent Gundam Wing 30th Anniversay short which was animated in a way that felt like it was made with actual cels. Hope that maybe Sunrise will make short animations for other series like Giant Gorg, Layzner, Dragonar, and '90s works like Escaflowne and Gasaraki.
