It took its time but I loved this movie. Already from the first scene in the flashback, you have the older Shotaro saying that seeing Sokichi during his time as a kid felt like falling in love at first sight. Shotaro is a walking legacy of the man he admires. Ironically, I was playing Yakuza: Like a Dragon and I kept thinking of Ichiga Kasuga's obsession with Arakawa. Philip appears a bit late into the story but his reactions really help to improve the drama. I wonder if Toei is gonna keep adapting the manga cos I'm scared of Kai doing them alone after seeing the second season of Captain Tsubasa. Around 60 chapters out of 160 were adapted so far.

It really cannot be overstated or the point made too fine but in order to sell the conceit of the series being the best of Chandler, Hammett, et al all put in a centrifuge, you need to start by making the baddest man to ever walk the planet. Plus, being a post-milestone show (i.e the first Kamen Rider after Decade) he serves as that essential connection back to the Showa era where heroism was also a curse (see Jean-Karlo's excellent piece on Kamen Rider from last month). |
