It's like if Inuyasha became a tokusatsu

There’s a very fine line that the new Samurai Troopers walks. I can’t argue with any franchise that essentially asks the question spoiler[What if the universe from The Boys was invaded by demons/aliens, and after The Seven were slaughtered, the government had to find real heroes to actually fight back?]. This with a lot of gags and lighthearted moments that vary the mood quite a bit.
Also I could talk a decent bit about Cyberworld, a show that is unrepentant about wanting to sell toys, and somehow that resulted in the most fun a Transformers TV show has been in years. |

Some of the oldschool JPN fans of Samurai Troopers were very unhappy with the sequel, based on some tweets that I found. They were very sceptical on how the sequel is handling things - one person found the nostalgia bait via the 80s Jpop hits used in each episode too "try hard" and cringey, while others condemned the increased violence levels compared to the OG.

Toonami's thing with anime early on was saving shows from syndication hell - Sailor Moon, Ronin Warriors, and Dragon Ball Z all benefitted greatly from being on at a consistent time and a consistent channel that the right demographic was actually watching. Ronin Warriors made it in part simply because it was already out there. Either way, I don't think Ronin Warriors overall age was much of an issue. Aside from not being that far off time wise from the other shows mentioned, the look of TV anime was such that shows from roughly the mid 80's up through the late 90's generally looked similar enough. Not to mention, I'm rewatching it now, and I don't think it should be underestimated how strong the show's animation and drawings are (lots of great looking action sequences and posing). But, yeah, it did become a problem for other shows, most notably when the original Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) started airing. That did look noticeably older and made it instantly unappealing to a chunk of viewers. On that note, I still think they should've aired Zeta Gundam. When it seemed like it might've happened, the look of it was still not that far off from what people expected. Not to mention, I think kids and teens would've found something to appreciate in Kamille's rage fueled rebellious rampage at the start. |

Fair enough, but I found it more of a Western trope thrown onto this Eastern setting which always fascinates me. For better or worse, Gai would fit right in a James Gunn production like The Suicide Squad. And at least it represents something, in cultural stagnation rather than the too on the nose uses of music from Devil May Cry. |

Gotta say, Naste looks good in the sequel for someone in her 50s. I'm liking the series so far, looking forward to seeing what the new Troopers are like as a group.
This got me thinking about TechTV's old midnight anime block. I think Boogiepop Phantom might be the only series they showed that got any kind of later followup, unless you count Dual: Parallel Trouble Adventures being absorbed into the Tenchi-verse. |

Yoroiden Samurai Troopers/Ronin Warriors was definitely an formative experience for me in my anime fandom. It was the first anime I ever watched in its entirety, back when it was in syndication as part of a lineup that included DBZ and Samurai Pizza Cats (so even before it was on Toonami). I bought a fansub tape of the OVAs back in the day, long before the show ever made DVDs. Then I bought the double-sided disc DVD release boxset. And I have the Blu-Ray set now. I've downloaded soundtracks, made fanfiction, and even pixel art of the characters.
It, uh, doesn't hold up super well, but it has its charms. The new show is definitely much more interesting than I thought it would be. Certainly more brutal than the old series, which was largely bloodless. But it's too early to really make a judgement on its quality. I love the fakeout corporate Troopers who are just the worst people and will be replaced by the real new team. I hope Jun/Yuli makes an appearance. Also, if they dub this, they should use the Ocean Group, for old time's sake. But maybe keep the Japanese names. |

That guy is me (not literally) I also agree with the violence/gore porn. Just because the original audience has grow it does not mean they should add guts and blood, specially when the original did not have it. It screams "we don't know how to make an adult story". |

I always felt a little awkward/bad for Mobile Suit Gundam. I knew a lot of kids (hell, including myself) who never gave it the time since it aired after Wing and so was an immediate visual downgrade.

It was watching 08th MS Team that got me interested in the UC timeline and had me watching episodes of the original. |

Makes sense — that art really has not aged well. Especially if they’re gonna invite comparisons by putting it right next to Wing. This is why I used to hope for a proper, comprehensive adaptation of The Origin. Feels like MSG is pretty much the one anime that would benefit the most from a remake. |

I think it's too bad if some are still dismissive of Gundam to this day because the look of it is jarring. It actually does have quite a lot of great, interesting animation that's still a delight to look at, even if it's "different".
It also shouldn't be underestimated how the original Gundam getting released when it did may have worked out long term. I'd kept figuring no one liked it after the first backlash, but I kept being surprised by how many people I ran into who were down with it. Friends who I underestimated, random TV cartoon fans...and I don't mean online people. And my cousin! He had all the Gundam PS2 games! He liked the original and not SEED! Imagine not seeing your normie cousin in years, then finding he's not only a Gundam fan, but an OG Gundam fan. Oh, and he was really into Dragon Ball GT. Just being on TV at all, at that time when it still mattered, gave it a certain baseline. Stuff like that snowballs over the years, and although there's been lapses in availability, I think just being out there for so long (along with the "Gundam" name) helped its popularity rise and rise. And we've all seen how it's a regular thing for people to go back and watch the original after seeing whatever the newest one is. I'm happy it wasn't replaced by a shiny digital redo. It is now more appreciated than ever. |

While I don't understand why Origin's anime adaptation stopped hours, maybe minutes from the begining of the first series, I appreciate Sunrise remains loyal to the 1979 anime series. Besides, I disagree with the idea that 1979's Gundam "did not age well". There is a difference between "the animation is too old in comparison with what we have now" and "weeell, decades ago some people had another ideas about politcs/sex/ gender roles/ race…", which is usually the meaning after 'not aged well'. Gundam It is a TV series from 1979 with a budget not too high and a toy maker as sponsor who forced Sunrise to make some concessions (which, in the end, made Gundam what it is now). We should not have a remake of every anime just because it is not shiny enough for some viewers. |

Yeah people tend to overstate how "outdated" Mobile Suit Gundam looks, which does a huge disservice to the heaps of fantastic work from people like Yas and Itano. And there's a reason why GQuuuuuuX had a shot-for-shot remake of multiple scenes from the first episode, Tomino's storyboarding is unparalleled and timeless
