Really, Yoshitoshi Abe’s only involvement with the original novel was to do the cover for it (which, admittedly, was influential in getting me to read it).
The novel summary is fine, but this adaptation departs from it in a number of ways: it’s told from Rita’s point of view, starting from well before she was “an elite soldier”, indeed, she’s not a soldier at all — they’re a cleanup crew, the alien thing having been inactive for a year or more, with no sign of hostility until the beginning of the movie.
Keiji show up, but he doesn’t enter the fight for quite a while.
The movie was very good.
