...and this is why HiDive is not a serious competitor to Crunchyroll. They periodically add stuff. Then, turn around an remove some stuff too. Not just that, they generally do not get OVAs of the shows they offer, even if they are essential for the plot of a show.

Why remove just season 2 of K-On!? They will still have season 1 and the movie. If it is to boost physical sales, why not either put the show on sale or take the show off entirely? It seems very unlikely that they lost the license to stream for just season 2.

Surprising Petals of Reincarnation got a dub. Wonder if Hitler's Voice Actor will use his real name like Murase does or if he will go for a pseudonym.

Sentai/HIDIVE cannot compete with Crunchyroll because one company offers 35+ simulcasts per season and the other one only 3-5. Library size important, but I bet the vast majority of fans care more about the number of new simulcasts each season.

The OVA thing is super frustrating, I agree. I can think of several series in my collection with missing OVA episodes, such as Golden Kamuy and To Love-ru, that play into the greater plot of the TV show. Which leaves us missing part of the story.

THAT SAID, it's also my understanding that it's often not as simple as adding an OVA to the licensing agreement. Sometimes different people hold the rights to those. Or the license holder wants to make them a Japanese exclusive, like when they are pack-ins with a manga or light novel volume. Or the rights holder wants too much money. Or in the case of Tsugumomo, the OVA was crowdfunded, so I'm not even sure how licensing would work for that.

None of this is unique to HIDIVE. Streaming licenses generally only last five to six years and Sentai has had the rights to K-On since the mid 2010s. But Crunchyroll shows expire all the time but they just never announce it unlike HIDIVE. Like Crunchyroll made no announcement that Kaiji was leaving their service a few months ago after it had been streaming for a decade and they made no announcement about Hunter x Hunter 2011 expiring. And it's just s2 expiring because s2 is considered a separate production with it's own streaming contracts and expiration dates. Maybe it's possible they'll renew it somewhere down the line but if you really want a show you should just buy it on physical if it's already available especially a show like K-On that's over a decade old and had multiple re-releases from different companies already.

Yep. And that is why not having physical releases for so many shows stings. Like mentioned above, CR gets the lion's share of the licenses, and more and more of those are left to quietly fade off the service with no option to buy them.

There are monthly articles of "Here's What's Leaving Netflix." Something expiring and not renewing isn't unique to Hidive by any stretch. If anything, it's a bit more acceptable because they probably do have to make some calls on whether maintaining an older library is worth not being able to afford a new show. New ones tend to drive more interest on streaming services, so I can't exactly blame Hidive there. Plus, at least they consistently put what they do license on discs.
