just saw a piece on 60 MINUTES about this new trend in advertising where actors are planted and made to look like enthusiasts of a product, but are actually marketing it. they mentioned a company who used this to promote the Cowboy Bebop movie. they actually hired people to visit chatrooms and forums and create "buzz" about it.
whats disturbing is that they would have conversations about the movie, talking about how great it is, with the other parties not knowing they are talking to a paid marketer. just wondering what thoughts if any you all have about this, and if there are any PERPETRATORS here on this forum... hmmmmmmmm......the spectres of modern technology haunt so invisibly. |

I'm 100 percent positive that you can't make a living pretending to be a fan of something. It's similar to the pay the guys who stand on street corners and hold up "going out of business!" signs get.

As a former PR guy, I can attest that viral marketing works pretty darn well. As far as making a living out of it...well, that depends on the deal you have with your client. I did all right.
It's pretty durn sneaky, though. Can't say I liked doing it. |

We got some of the CB movie marketeers and dealt with them rather harshly. The only marketting of this sort that i've seen on this forum recently is for the Returner, which we banned fairly quickly. If there's some more subversive marketting going on, I haven't seen it.. we're a fairly open board, and while a lot of people "come and go", in the end there's still a fairly consistant core of users who have well-developed personalities that "viral" marketting doesn't have. Of course, a lot of how anime spread was by word-of-mouth, which is, in effect, a kind of viral marketting.. although uncoordinated. |

Well, something must be done about this! I will send an e-mail to my Senator... right after I polish off this Vanilla Coke, the great taste of Coca-Cola with a smooth twist of Vanilla. Diet Vanilla Coke also available.
Oh wait... our senators-for-life in Canada are fairly useless. |

There's a viral marketing campaign to buy the Family Guy DVDs. On no less than 3 different forums that I am on, I have seen the same guy (didn't even bother to choose a different username for each forum) post the same exact spiel. I find it extremely annoying. Especially since that one was particularly obvious. "Season 2 now on DVD! Quick, pick it up now!" Blah.
All it does is annoy the hell out of people. |

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Ohhh man that's funny. *wipes tear from eye* Good stuff. Yeah it really disgusting when people do that. Frankly I don't know them so they can't get me to see/buy something simply because they say it's "really awesome" They're like telemarketers and it should be illegal. So there! Nyah telemarketers NYAH! |

Yep, we actually had at TZ someone who was an... er... unusually enthusiastic fan of WB animation who, when we banned him for spamming, turned out to have an IP at "warnerbros.com." I mean, they didn't even bother to leave their local network.

Companies will do anything to promote their products. Tons of money are spent in researching effective forms of advertisiment.
Using this way of advertisment would leave quite a few people unawares that they are being led on buy someone paid to 'be a fan' of thier product and not just some guy who likes the product. |

I've seen this variety of sleazy marketting a couple of times. It's very annoying and does not sit well with me at all.
Most marketing is essentially disingenous on some level, viral marketing especially so. I think it might have a limited lifespan, however, since moderators and administrators have rapidly become very savvy about such campaigns. As I recall, The Returner was locked and banned rather quickly when he popped up here. Although not before several forum denizens, my dubious self included, got a few satisfying jabs in. |
