But an English publisher will pick it up eventually, right? I'm considering buying the German edition, but the German language isn't exactly my first choice...

Not necessarily. The Gantz manga took forever to be licensed and still hasn't even been released, despite the popularity of the series. Sadly, it's all about the money with the American manga market.

Money makes the world go round. But still, the anime is quite popular isn't it, wouldn't it be logical to license the manga instead of going after titles that do not have a (popular) animated counterpart? Not that I'm complaining about the fact that publishers don't shy away from manga series such as The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service and The Demon Ororon...

Is it me, or are American (and European) manga publishers impossible to predict?

I'm sure it will be picked up soon with its popularity as an anime. (Dunno about the Geneon sales, though.) Gantz was never really a series I considered as popular as BL is right now, but I could be wrong. It could be that I've just recognized more fans of the latter. Hopefully, with the increasing rate of the manga market, we'll see it in stores sometime soon.

And that isn't the case with Japan? Granted, there are plenty of niche/alternative publishers, but you also get some gems over here. (Though outside of Ponent Mon/Fanfare, I'm pretty sure everyone's intention is "sales first, elitist praise later.")

As for Black Lagoon, it's a Shogakukan property, so Viz has first dibs. It would have to be rated "M" and shrink-wrapped if brought over here, though it doesn't have the literary merit/notoriety to be placed under their Signature Line.

Then again, Viz put Tough under their Editor's Choice (oi...), so who the hell knows.

Viz... I'm not a huge fan of them. I think Black Lagoon would be better off with Dark Horse, even if their release schedules are far from perfect.

Well, if in Euros is 9.00 and if you translate that to US$ to 12.72, I bet that the same in the US will be like 9.99
Or at least I hope so....

Well, their list prices are $13.95, and I'm already pushing my limit when I buy Del Rey manga for $11.95 each month. It may only be a few more dollars than your average $9.99, but college budgets are the devil. Evil or Very Mad

I hadn't thought about that... I usually pay €8-€10 or so for a DH manga, which is the price many Dutch comicstores ask for your average Tokyopop release, so I had forgotten the price difference is (seems?) larger in the US. Still, the DH releases are of high quality and I don't mind paying a bit extra for that. And hey, their manga releases aren't that frequent, so it's not a major drain on my already tight budget Smile

At least you're not in Canada, where we are paying prices that are usually at least $2 more...and the Canadian dollar and the American are now at pretty much equal value.

The downsides to having prices printed on books (and set far in advance when the difference still existed).

Unfortunately, at this point, Shueisha and Shogakugan titles are unlikely to go to anyone but Viz even if Viz isn't interested in actually releasing it. I doubt Dark Horse just sat around and suddenly decided they wanted Gantz; they were probably working on it for a while.
