Anyone know why they're calling episode 28, 'fan-made'? Was it based on a Japanese fanfic or something?

The DVD? "Terminus" I believe. So only the limited edition has this episode? That's sort of...unfair. |

26 episodes of hack//sign were aired on tv in japan. The extra episodes were released on video and never aired.

Though I do not know much about the 28th episode, the 27th is an introduction, albeit vague, to the game character Gardenia. Her introduction is given through a flashback of Mimiru's past, aka when she first started playing The World. Anyways, hope that clears up questions about 27.

another interesting thing about the DVD's... look at the first letter of the name on each case... spells "LOGOUT" I just noticed it when I was picking up vol.5 yesterday

Episode 28 is also known as .hack//GIFT. It is an OVA, not a regular episode of .hack. I think it's not fan-made, rather done by Cyberconnect2, the people who did the video games. More information can be found here at dothackers.net but in short, it's a wacky sort of meeting of the characters from the games and from //SIGN. This is definitely one worth plunking down the extra $5 for if you came all this way on the Platinum Editions.
