So folks, 2003 has finally come to pass (and there was much rejoicing). Anime as a whole has put itself on the cutting edge of the future, and we must look forward to the future and not back to the past.

We've had the release of two stateside funded anime (Big O season 2 and Ninja Scroll TV) and an anime won an Academy Award. Now, how're we going to top that? So, spill it. What do the wise and knowledgable people of the ANN forum (dear lord, I said that with a straight face) think will be the big stories and happenings of 2004?

Well, hopefully Millenium Actress will take the Oscar making it two years in row for anime (my bet's on Finding Nemo though).

It would be nice to see Naruto and One Piece being released sometime within the year. I hope to see Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu this year also. Bandai has many titles coming out this year that I am very, very excited about:
1) Zeta Gundam
2) Gundam Seed
3) Wolf's Rain
4) .Hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet
They are also going to finish off Witch Hunter Robin (YES!!)

On Cartoon Network starting soon we get Ghosts in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Wolf's Rain, and Witch Hunter Robin. Not only that, from what I hear "Saturday night is anime night".

Manga-wise all I'm hoping for is Outlaw Star and HunterXHunter, but we're off to a good start with RahXephon and (keep your fingers crossed) Prince of Tennis.

In terms of Cons, this will be a big year (for me at least). I am so far definately going to BAAF, Otakon, and Anime Next. I'm also working on Anime Boston for my Easter break.

Yup, I see 2004 as a very big year for anime. Very Happy

It will be foolhardy to say that no anime will never be nominated for Best Animated Feature again, but I think in the long run, it will be the exception, not the rule, depending on the strength of the American competition, and, this year, with just three nomination slots, the token foreign animated film will be The Triplets of Belleville, not Millenium Actress, as much as I'd like to see Millenium Actress get nominated and win.

I predict that the market for non-kiddy merchandising spin-off TV anime will level off or decline slightly as the market gets saturated in the next year or two, and there will be mergers between even the biggies to stay afloat.

And there will be some annoying bogus conspiracy theory which will erupt on anime message boards and newsgroups about a Hollywood production ripping-off a specific, usually obscure, anime based on similarities that could have come from anywhere, though, to be fair, nothing remotely on the level of Outlaw Star vs. Firefly erupted in 2003 that I noticed.

And someone will finally license Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou.

And that I will hit 1000 posts 'round about... now! Woo-hoo!

I predict that 2004 will be the year that the phrase "It's about damned time!" is heard every other month. What with Marmalade Boy, SaiKano, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Neon Genesis Evangelion with the famous "Director's Cut" footage, & Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex getting Stateside release, and squealing fangirls finally getting their dose of new Inu-Yasha on Cartoon Network...plus I wouldn't be surprised if the first Inu-Yasha movie came around late in the year, and some anticipated series like Naruto were announced at some point.

Well hopefully they finally follow a prediction by one of the Anipike riders that we can see chains dedicated specifically to anime and manga. But I don't see that happening for another 5 years. (Assuming it's still lucrative by then.)

Anyway, I predict that people will stop buying Evil Dead from Anchor Bay, forcing them to finally cough up the dough for Angel's Egg.

Shonen Jump will release so many manga titles in TPB form that they won't be profitable, forcing them to create another magazine containing said titles to off-set the costs. Meanwhile, CLAMP will publish another manga, thus pissing off their fans and hurting their sales on their current series. Tokyopop will
also suffer, but will survive by investing in manga from the Marmalade Boy and Kodoma No Omocha creators.

Anime based on dating sims targeting the age group tired of Yu Gi Oh will be the next new fad. Look for MTV as a co-producer.

Following Courtney Love, Madonna and Britney Spears will have their own yuri manga series. Of course, by that time, their 15 minutes will be up, and no one will care.

Expect companies such as Marvel and DC to co-fund anime adaptations of their comics for the home video market.

Gary Coleman will be cast as Pen Pen for the Evangelion movie.
(A guy can dream, can't he?!)

Tokyopop will stop doing business with Wal Mart when they refuse to stock Love Hina, due to the suggestive covers.

Harry Knowles will have a cameo in the Kill Bill anime prequel/sequel.

GTA will be popular enough in Japan to have its own anime and manga spin-offs.

I would've said mergers too, but in today's market, I don't think that's lucrative. More likely it'll be third parties buying shares in anime companies as Nintendo did with Bandai.

I predict that one the big three networks will have one of thier best and brightest pitch a live-action rip of FLCL after another sit-com series or three flop and leaves more holes in their line-up.

I'm guessing the biggest anime release of 2004 is acually not an anime release, but the release of the new FF7 movie...but that's just my opinion... Surprised

Forgot one: ADV and Gainax will release some more concept art and some more excited interviews with guys from WETA regarding the prospects of a live-action Evangelion, but there won't be any substantial announcements in regards to studios, funding, cast, or directors**, and eventually the live-action Evangelion will become the movie equivalent of Duke Nukem Forever, assuming they don't give up.

**Not quelling the old "OMG!!! Peter Jackson will direct! And they'll shoot three movies for it at once!" rumours, not to mention the old "Daniel Radcliffe will be Shinji" rumour.

Colin Farrell as Kaji?! Shocked *squeals*

Expect to see alot more titles to get licensed, both anime and manga. Naruto dangit! Looking forward to rewatching WHR dubbed (curiosity after reading dub reviews) and finally getting a chance to see Wolf's Rain. I've been *this close* to downloading the eps due to my impatience.
FFVII: Advent Children will hopefully live up to everyone's expectations.
I'll finally be able to go to the bookstore and purchase more than one manga at a time. Very Happy Thank god for financial aid!

Around next december I expect Howl's Moving Castle to get a wide stateside release, *hopefully* becoming a huge success. That would make it only the second anime to be considered an actual success at the box office (Pokemon: The Movie being the first).
