I just want to point out an anime series that is being overlooked by many of the more popular animes, however this anime has a lot of potential to be in many peoples top 10-20 list. Im only going to talk about one anime series because after reading the rules I dont want to break any.
Right now many people are into the anime Death Note which is a very thrilling anime with exellent artwork/animation. But if you finished that series, and feel like there are no more shows that can impress, i reccommend not folding in the towel so quickly.

Darker Than Black is an anime series that of course originated as a manga that is greatly overlooked so far. Rumor has it that funimation has got the license and will start dubbing the series. Its a great dark, yet fun series to watch. It has everything needed in a great anime, a small amount of love, a great deal of action, and well, alot of complicated reasonings behind everything.
This is simply an anime that i came across and realised that it was really a decent watch. It may not top peoples number ones, but if you are a fan of Deathnote, Black lagoon, Claymore, YuYu Hakusho this may be perfect.
I honestly just want more people to watch this anime before its too late and you all start liking it in 2 years after it comes on adult swim.
Anyway enjoy.

I am definetly going to watch it now that you've mentioned it... I just wanted to comment that none of the anime you listed are related to eachother, and thus i fail to see how they might relate to Darker than Black.

thanks for pointing it out!!!

I think Death Note has below average animation quality, and a below average character art style. I was waiting for Misa to appear on Cartoon Network so I could judge how well the females are drawn in this show, and she was ugly last night. I think it's stupid that this series is so well-regarded. Maybe that's only the case on these boards and not so much elsewhere, I dunno. I think it's mostly girls who like Death Note, not guys. Just like Prince of Tennis.

Maybe this is gonna attract flames, oh well. It's what I honestly think though.

About Yu Yu Hakusho, I don't see what relation it has to Death Note. It's a totally different kind of show from a totally different time period. I haven't seen any of the other mentioned shows.

Maybe it has to do with the popularity it gained when it was licensed to US companies? Or maybe not?

I always thought the Darker than Black series was a fairly famous one. Unfortunately, I didn't quite like this title.

I thought the animation in Death Note was pretty good myself. I also think you are hugely wrong when you say mostly girls like it, since I've never seen any indication of that. It seems to be a fairly gender-neutral show to me, actually.

Also I think Darker than Black gets a decent amount of attention. The real hugely overlooked series are the ones that are good but will never be licensed.

Darker Than Black

Huh? Darker than BLACK is nowhere near "overlooked." Plenty of people have seen it; ANN already has 1500+ views. I'm sure there's plenty more than that from people not on ANN. And while I'm not going to say anything about the DtB itself, I could think of better series that shouldn't be overlooked: Mononoke is #1 on my list (192 views?!). At least DtB has a way higher chance of being licensed... Anime cry

I disagree with you that Darker than Black is being ignored. Lack of popularity doesn't always mean it just isn't getting enough attention. I do hear the name thrown around a bit so it's probably not being completely forgotten either. May be people see it and don't find it particularly great? There's nothing wrong with that. Look at our Porcupine, he thinks most of the best, highest-rated anime anywhere in, well, the world, suck. And constantly flame-bait people about it, often with nonsensical reasons at that.

But in the interests of possibly turning this thread into a "underrated and/or underrecognized anime" thread (was there one before?), I'll post a couple of mine:

Aside from year 2007's best but strangely enough largely ignored list: Baccano!, Mononoke, Ghost Hound, and Dennou Coil, all of which has been advertised elsewhere by a few others in some other threads already, I'll include one anime (so the list won't be long and tedious):

Akage no Anne. Yes, I posted about this anime in the other thread [what are you watching right now? thread], but this is probably more appropriate. In short: it is a pre-Ghibli (i.e. the guys who founded Ghibli worked on this prior to that studio's founding) adaptation of the book Anne of Green Gables. In not-so-short: it is a very faithful adaptation to the book, and a very interesting one. With a charming lead protagonist, a surprisingly accurate portrayal of the Nova Scotia countryside and manners, beautiful backgrounds, and a leisurely pace, it's really good.

It's also considered one of the best among the legendary "World Masterpiece Theater" anime list, and also with arguably the least angst (LOL, Remi), so yeah.

Have to say I agree with this post along with most of the others. Darker than Black is far from overlooked, it's quite popular really. Granted people that actually post their ranks on ANN are probably a little more hardcore than most, but still being ranked 234th in seen and with an 8.2 rating tells me that it's far from overlooked or underappreciated. Just because there aren't a billion websites devoted to it like Bleach and Naruto doesn't mean it isn't popular in it's own right.

It's more watched than tons of shows from 2007 that are far better in my opinion, including Seirei no Moribito, Heroic Age, Lovely Complex, Dennu Coil and thats only the shows that were in the same Spring season. Also aired in the same season were Lucky Star, which is only 30 ranks higher in watched, and Claymore, which is only 2 ranks higher.

Personally I thought it was okay, nothing that special in terms of really, well, anything. Pretty standard stuff really, art execution was okay, art direction was okay, dialogue was okay, characters were probably a little boring than most, action was decent but fairly few and far between and semi-repetative, plot was nothing special either. It wasn't bad by any means, but I wouldn't really put it as much more than average personally. I think you need to find a new cause to try to trumpet, because I doubt you'll convince anyone here that Darker than Black has been ignored and underrated compared to other shows that truely are like Ghost Hound and Dennou Coil.

Ok i made some vas comparisons. I added YuYu Hakusho simply becasue of the powers each person (contracter) had.
Anime-Planet compares Darker than black with Ergo Proxy,Claymore, Deathnote, black Lagoon, Witch Hunter Robin.
So, i think i was pretty decent in comparing DtB with other animes.

Now, when some dont like DeathNote because of its artwork, that is merely subjective. I actually try to only watch anime that have DeathNotes' style of animation/art.(Mad House Production) Black Lagoon is my favorite animation.

Also, when i said Darker Than Black is overlooked, i really meant in forums. So i apolgize if many have seen it, and thought it popular, but i never hear/read people talking about it, therefore i assumed it was lacking in viewership.
I didn't say it was the best anime, but i found it to be a good fun watch.
Im actually happy that many of you have seen and/or heard of it=)

Well, there was a decent-length thread made for the series last year. It pops up occasionally other places, but that's the main thread if you want to see a lot of others' opinions. I've only seen five episodes, but I plan on finishing it eventually.

Actually, it was licensed halfway through its run.

Darker Than Black was okay...I mean I give an anime a least up to 5 episodes to give some sort of plot or at least a hint of it and it really didn't catch me like that so I just stopped looking at it. Maybe I should go back and re-watch it but every episode since the first one seemed like a filler "guy gets a job; guy does the job" I'm sitting there like okay.....what else.... And the fight scenes were ...uhhh...let me think....well if I have to think about it than it probably didn't stand out much.

I guess I'll go back and watch a little more seeing how everybody is recommending it.

uhh... i don't know if you saw the yahoo ratings, but Darker Than Black was number 10 in Japan. i think the reason it doesn't get any acclaim is cause it kind of fell apart towards the end. it was a good series though.

if anything is overlooked, it's the work of Masaaki Yuasa. this guy has to be one of the best animators out there right now, but almost no one has heard of him. Mindgame was an Oscar-caliber movie and Kemonzume was probably one of the best series of 2006, but i have yet to see either of these get licensed. hopefully Kaiba draws attention to his work.

I'm glad someone mentioned Kemonozume (I was going to)! Definitely one of 2006's best and deserves more attention, especially a license (I hope ADV gets it since I originally wanted Geneon to bring it over). I think a lot of people overlook it because of its animation and character designs. Rolling Eyes
