Inspired by the "guys who watch 'girly anime' thread"
And I'm not talking about shounen anime like Naruto, Fullmetal Alchemist, or anything of the like. I mean seinen titles, intended for old men. Most often perverted old men. Personally I love love love the Higurashi/When They Cry series. And Kodomo no Jikan (the manga; WHY DO I LOVE IT?! I just can't stop...at chapter 39 now and it's getting so intense +.+). And I'm not crazy about School Days, but it was a lot of fun. Soooo, yeah. Any other girls get called a perverted old man by their friends? |

Interesting thread topic - I wish you luck with it.
However, I would like to question your idea that seinen titles are intended for "old men", and "mostly perverted old men", at that. In fact, seinen titles are numerous and varied, and are aimed at college-age or above audiences. That is, it's anime that would normally not be considered "for kids" under any circumstances, and which may (but doesn't necessarily) contain dark, violent or sexually-charged material. Most of the time, however, seinen anime is thoughtful or intelligent stuff, with an undercurrent of philosophy, which puts it mostly outside the "for kids" grouping, and tends to limit the audience quite a lot. For instance, the two Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou OVAs -- which feature a couple of kisses, no violence, and the implied impending extinction of the human race -- are seinen anime. As for Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, I'm not sure that there is any fairness in labelling its audience perverted. Sure, it's dark and full of nasty stuff -- but so was Se7en, and I guess you could call that a sort-of mainstream film. Just because there is a lot of shocking material (or material intended to shock, whether it does or not) in a story, that doesn't make it "perverse", necessarily. Se7en wasn't even shocking, it was so predictable... So, while the thread topic is fine, you might want to rethink some of your basic assumptions. - abunai Still on vacation in sweltering Sweden. Well I love a lot of anime based off of visual novels like rumbling hearts. I also like gokusen (which had a great live action version.) I like blood + and genshiken (yes those are seinen) and Le Chevalier D'Eon
I like a lot of seinen anime actually. I kind of think of it as a guilty pleasure type of thing but I can't help it. I don't think it's any worse then a guy liking tokyo mew mew.
|

I don't think a female fan watching something like Blood+ and Genshiken is quite a fair enough analogy. When I went to the Blood + panel at Wondercon most of the fans were girls who had big crushes on the guys in the series. I think the real question is if any girls really like shows like Eiken or Ikki Tousen.

I wonder indeed. I don't think there'll be any argument with the notion that such a title was made with a male demographic in mind. |

I believe I have said this before, but it bears repeating: Eiken is often described as a sexualized show pandering to breast-fixated males, by people who proclaim their loathing for it. Often, it seems to me that these detractors have seen only a few scattered clips from it, and have formed their judgement based on those. In fact, some of the most vocal detractors of it have clearly stated that "they couldn't bear to watch more than a few minutes of it". So take their opinions for what they are worth. Yet, to my eyes, Eiken is not a pornographic show, any more than Puni Puni Poemy was -- it's a ridiculously over-the-top comedy, which happens to use sexual features in its gags. So, is it for men only? I don't think so. Hopefully, a sensible audience, of whatever gender, would see it for the comedy that it is, and consider the sexual elements to be merely a vehicle. I know of at least two female anime fans who find Eiken as hilarious as I do -- so there are some female fans. - abunai |

I think the problem with Eiken is that it is a parody of harem anime that isn't very good at parodying or being funny. Since it isn't good at either of those and yet still being a parody, it just looks like a really bad harem anime that copies from the worst parts of other harem series. And because it isn't identified as a parody by those who don't take the time to watch it (which I still don't recommend anyway), the exaggerated breast sizes come out looking as if they were intentional fanservice.
But yeah, I don't see this as pornographic or as a series that panders to guys who love big boobs; breast fanservice is usually more appealing shape-wise, regardless of size. If Eiken was actually funny I wouldn't doubt it would appeal to both males and females for making fun of clichés in harem anime. |

I like series like that too. I actually liked Shuffle! I even tried the VN for a really short while but I stopped once it got to the "graphic" parts
*raises hand* Just by my ordinary, non-anime fan friends though. They always make a big deal of how I watch ecchi anime (and I don't even watch ecchi anime that much). My male otaku friends think it's cool that they can talk with me when it comes to that though. Sometimes they're even surprised that I know more than they do |

Hmm... I can't say that I have not watch anime with guys before, because there are some occasions that they invite themselves to watch it with me. However, one time some of the guys did invite me to watch hentai, because they don't want to pay for the video in the hotel.
I just left the room after that. I had to put up watching Burn-Up W and that was really funny, but watching adult anime (especially with guys) is no-no with me. I think there is nothing wrong watching anime "for guys" because really, I try to get best of what anime can offer, or something really entertaining. I have Eiken because of how ridiculous the..err... bounce. Yet I still laugh, found it fun, and I think one time is enough. Watching Air was also a treat, because even though I don't mind the moe I thought it was pretty cute. Although, I have found series similar or gives me that kind of service, but at least I can talk to the girls about the recent shows. |

That's true but any non anime fan would say "you like that? It's so graphic" Ok I also like shuffle! but I hate to admit it even to my anime loving friends. I haven't played any of the games associated with the anime I like I was going to get ai yori aoishi but I didn't really care for the sereis (I was just curious about visual novels and wanted to play a non-ero.) I did end up playing the otome game yo-jin-bo though (A gentle yet entertaining introduction.) I bring that up because I noticed that the companies are realizing that seinen does appeal to girls just like a lot of guys like josei like nana and I think they are making an attempt to market to those girls (but would it still be seinen that way?) It has already happened with shounen and shoujo lots of girls love naruto and lots of guys like full moon. |

While I have seen the OVA and am reading the manga I can honestly 100% say my ex gf found the OVA to be funnier then I did. She honestly laughed at how ridiculous the females were more then I did. Now my ex was a very open person so I'm sure that has a lot do with it. I honestly could never find Eiken to be pornographic simply because while the jokes are almost all sexually oriented they are so over the top you can't honestly take it seriously. I mean the show is obviously made to be over the top and not to be taken in a serious manner. On topic though I have to say most of my friends that are female watch and enjoy as many "male" oriented shows as I do. maybe I'm just lucky and my female friends are more open and not quick to label or judge something but most find the obvious male oriented shows as funny as I do. I mean my ex liked Eiken and she was the one who read up on Magikano before I had ever heard about it too. I have 2 female friends who read Psychic Academy and Battle Vixens (Ikki Tousen's manga name) and they both like shows like Magikano, Love Hina, and He is my Master. |

What about Angel Mort? And I'm not really trying to label audiences, but pointing out a sterotype of the genre. Sorry if that was unclear Air and Kanon sound amazing, I'm going to buy the DVDs as soon as they restock at my local Bestbuy. And I just finished Clannad, which I'm pretty sure counts as seinen.
Even some of my anime-fan friends don't know what seinen is. The last time I tried to explain I got "Oh, you mean that hentai stuff? I can't believe you blah blah blah." I tried explaining how ecchi is VERY different from seinen, but at that point they're just not willing to listen anymore, y'know? x.x
|

Visual novels and their anime/manga adaptations (no matter the original are 18+ only or not) cannot be categorized as shōnen, shōjo, seinen, or josei. While their target players/audiences are mostly overlapped with seinen demographics, their roots are quite different from seinen manga; just like you wouldn't call any R-rated movie as a "seinen movie." |

I'm sort of confused by the conflicting interpretations of the term "seinen" here (my understanding of it seems to lie closest to the definition abunai gave above). Mostly because I've only ever seen the term used for series aimed primarily at adult viewers (that's "adult" as in maturity-level, not sexual-suggestiveness)-- and often not even particularly fanservice-y stuff, either. In particular, I'm thinking titles like Himitsu & Gallery Fake (both of which I enjoy)-- less fantastic situations, more subtle characterizations, and frankly maybe even a little boring-sounding to (some) younger fans. Like skyler25 above me, though, I definitely don't equate "seinen" with "ecchi". Have I been misusing the term this whole time?
