AMAZING NEWS!!! I've still got my old copies (got the entire series, unflipped), but if this brings more people into our soon-to-be-growing-exponentially cult, I'm all for that!

I remember I asked Viz about them reprinting this in particular at a panel YEARS ago and got a "not at this time", but glad the anime coming out has changed their mind so quickly!

Also, I'm REALLY hoping they'll publish "volume 20", which was more side stories. Vol 19 was also mostly side stories, but we never got the vol 20 ones in English, so this would be the first time on vol 20.

Ha, for some reason I forgot they already went back and republished it like that - I remember Banana Fish from the PULP magazine ads in Animerica. Funny to think it was one of those titles that stuck in my head as a newbie anime fan, right up there with Slayers and Trigun. But I never did check it out...guess that's changing soon.

This is really great news.
A tiny part of me wishes VIZ were doing a little more than a reprint. It was translated so long ago and had different people working on it too during that. So the English edition could be a little inconsistent sometimes. But as an old, atypical girl's comic I'll take it. And I hope it might lead to people being more interested in Akimi Yoshida's body of work. (I'd like to see Kisshô Tennyo in English too.)

I appreciate your profile pic and everything else I've heard about this series sounds good. I'm excited for the show and sorry I skipped the old TokyoPop release.

TP never had the license for Banana Fish.

Damn, you're right. Oops. Sad

I'm remembering old school Borders and the walls and walls of TokyoPop manga. If this one is getting reprinted by Viz, maybe we can also get Fake and Gravitation reprints, actual TokyoPop manga. These classic series reissues are great though, keep em' coming.

I'M SO HAPPY. I was hoping the new anime would bring on a reprint, but I didn't think it would happen this quickly. I've wanted this series for so long, but it was always too pricey or hard to find. Glad I can finally add it to my collection.

Well, it makes sense since the anime will be coming out soon. The books have been out of circ for awhile. The good thing is that we'll be able to pick them up now. n

Now I wonder how Viz is going to publish them. Will they give us an Omnibus format?

I know by the time the series starts students will be requesting the books and reading them.

It’s just a straight up reprint of the 2nd edition (think this was early 2000’s, the unflipped books with the shojo logo girl in the moon crescent on the spine). So people should be able to fill in their collections too if they have already have some of those 19 volumes.

It's too bad they're not doing a proper re-release (new translation and bringing over the unreleased content), but I'm still excited. I've been wanting to get into this series for a long time now but tracking down volumes for a reasonable price isn't an easy task. Looking forward to adding these to my collection.

I’ve been wanting to read this for a very long time. By the time I had heard of it, the early volumes were OOP and hard to track down.

Ah. Well, I guess I'm just going to proceed with ordering a few and then if people request more then we'll get more.

Great news, as this was one of those series that I remember from the old days, but never got into myself. The new anime looks like a great update, and is sure to bring some attention to this classic. (And maybe change a few stereotypes about shojo manga!)

But I quit buying print books & manga years ago - is there some kind of obstacle to doing a digital reissue? Is there going to be either a digital release, or a new bunkoban edition, in Japan?
