This is terrible news. We don’t need so many streaming services cannibalizing each other. Most people can only afford one anyways and it’s usually CR

Oh lordy, here comes another one.

I hope they can get non-exclusive licenses; while competition is a good thing IMHO, I don't want to sign up for another streaming outfit, and then have to get Apple TV on top of that.

I guess time will tell if this becomes a "real" thing - the backers seem substantial enough - but does anyone have a list of shows they expect to have internationally?

As an aside, and not to slight Apple enthusiasts, but Apple TV has always seemed like an also ran to me, that only exists because of Apple having money to burn. I know one regular consumer that has it.

Funimation could definitely use some competition, and I say this as someone with a premium subscription.

Here comes AnimeLog 2.0 YouTube Was (Not) A Good Idea, hopefully with more anime this time. The example images used are from popular Shueisha titles because of course they are (all of them already licensed, naturally). Apple TV is an interesting choice, I'm sure some people watch all their anime on a TV screen but I doubt that's anywhere near the majority of anime fans.

Also heads up about a small mistake in the article: it's Animeka LLP, not Anime LLP.

So a complicated problem, having more Anime streaming services breeds competition. Yet also causes the carving up of content, where if you want to watch everything legally you would need a handful of subscriptions.

I wonder if the international version will eventually include titles that have never been released outside of Japan (or only released in like 1 or 2 other countries), such as Danchi Tomoo.

That's what I'm thinking, too. Looking over what's currently available in Japan on Animeka, there's a fair amount of titles that have never received an official English translation. If those are ignored for the international expansion, then this will just wind up being Daisuki all over again & be completely pointless.

This is very good news
It seems that the big anime companies have realized the potential of anime streaming services in Japan and the world by looking at the investment of Sony and Netflix in anime and the popularity of Crunchyroll.
Because there is almost no anime streaming service in Japan made by Japanese companies, and Western companies like Netflix take advantage of this.
Netflix is not bad, but they only make low-quality anime and want to make everything western (as well as Crunchyroll, which made cartoons like High Guardian Spice).
Also, if this streaming service becomes available in the world and succeeds, it will increase the quality of anime, because unlike Crunchyroll and Netflix, Sony and animeka parent companies are among the greats in the anime industry and they have made very popular anime so far
Popular anime like "demon slayer", "jujutsu kaisen", "My Hero Academia", "overlord all season", "Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid", "Sword Art Online all season". "The rising of the shield hero 'and etc are currently available in animeka
This time, unlike daisuki, it seems that they are trying to release popular and exclusive anime on animeka.
"Animeka" is also a good name for an anime streaming service Smile

If they're restricting this to Apple TV users only there's no way this is going to take off. Anyway remember Daisuki, AnimeLog, and Toei's YouTube channel?

I don't understand what you mean by this. There's plenty of Japanese streaming services in Japan that, just like Netflix, stream anime in addition to various other shows and movies. Sure, there might not be many that focus exclusively on anime, but how is Netflix taking advantage of a gap that they themselves don't even fit in?

Mind sharing what those exclusives are? 'Cause MHA certainly isn't one.

Here’s a Google Translate of Animeka’s lineup in Japan.

Far as I can see, a lot of it is either on a major US streaming service already, or the kind of series that’s fairly niche because of its age.

I mean, Netflix makes its original anime, which only airs on Netflix, but other anime streaming services in japan no have the original anime, and that's an advantage for Netflix.
Also, if you have read the full text of the news, you see that they have said that they intend to release exclusive content on animeka in the future, such as including spinoffs and documentaries based on popular anime.
And that this site has only been officially launched for 10 days and it is still too early for exclusive content
But the biggest reason that increases the success of animeka is the owner "MY THEATER D.D., INC". The company is the largest digital anime and movie distributor in Japan, which receives distribution rights from manufacturers and makes them available to services such as Netflix and Amazon.
The reason for Daisuki's failure was that its parent companies were only specialized in making anime and did not specialize in licensing and marketing, and that they initially went straight to foreign markets and ignored Japan.
But MY THEATER has been specializing in broadcasting since 2011 and works with more than 200 anime and film companies and more than 50 content distribution companies such as Netflix.
Therefore, the possibility of success of this streaming service is high.

The one thing that jumped out to me (because I'm kinda weird) is the Santa Company: Secret of Christmas movie. It's not licensed and hasn't been fansubbed. Then again I'm a weird person who likes random obscure movies and it's not gonna get other people to subscribe just cause of that.
Still, there's a lot of selection on here and has some big names so it may be appealing to people who don't have Crunchy/Funi/Hidive since it's only around $4 a month
