... Alright then, you just made me really want to see this movie! This sounds awesome! Why yes, I do enjoy all sorts of movies, including ones that sound bad. I think this review had the complete opposite effect on me then what I should have.

Of the few I've seen, this is favorite Detective Conan movie. Mostly because I love the inclusion of Gin and how Conan and the gang finally get out of a burning inferno.
So, they do actually say it's Mt. Fuji, huh? I guess they couldn't pretend this was taking place in the Western U.S. anymore. |

I thought the name changes weren't FUNi's choice, I thought they were asked to change them by the Japanese makers--I think they had to change the name of the show due to the name "Conan" being used somewhere else at the time. |

A bit of a prejudice you got there.
"...It would just be nice if they'd do it with a little more finesse. As it is, Countdown to Heaven plays like the mutant love child of Encyclopedia Brown and John McClane. (Do not think too hard about the logistics of that coupling.) Its shifts from familiar character shtick to sleuthing to Towering Inferno-meets-Die Hard derring-do are jarring and its parallele movie story-lines obviously serve different masters (mystery and big-budget thrills), occasionally bumping off one another but never meshing to form a satisfying whole" I disagree I think it messed very well and was satisfying as a whole, and he was never OTC, conan remained in character the whole time and stayed true to it's genius teenage detective roots. I would love to see John try and do physics in his head Also I would like to know how you guys think that solving the case is easy, yes I understand the whole pick the least likely character bit, but proving that is a whole other matter. Also the Movie spends the majority of it's time on the mystery and develops it well, just because the movie does not try to make us fear the villain does not mean it is underdone (this is a who donit not a "modern mystery"). and the structure works very well I think, just because the movie gives all the styles of conan in one movie does not mean that it does not have a constant voice. "The name-altering business in Funimation's dub defies logic more obviously than ever (the characters play kanji games and camp on Mt. Fuji; who are the writers trying to fool with their Americanized nomenclature?).... competently (if hammily) acted and with a sense of humor all its own. Dr. Agasa's, er European? accent remains a mistake, and the ham some of the one-off characters bring to the table could choke a feasting Viking" Agasa's VA is not a mistake if you listen to the Japanese VA and compare it you will see that it is a legitimate comparison to the Japanese version, also look at agasa and tell me he does not look different from every other main character in the series (he doesn't even look similar to them, made there is a reason to that). now with Agasa's voice you can argue that is is poorly done, but you can't argue that it is a legitimate english version of his voice. Takagi/wilder (If you are referring to him) however is Not only an incorrect VA performance it is also a god awful one. I assume that is what your comment was talking about because otherwise I have NO clue what that viking thing meant. I guess I now have to go and argue about Americanization... again. there is a thing called consistency and funimation need to keep it. name changes do not make something Americanized this movie is not at all Americanized unlike the episodes that have been released to this point. that is why officer chiba keeps his name. if it was Americanized then they would have been driving past new york and saw the towers not west hama city like they do in the Japanese and english versions. stop treating this series like it is Americanized IT IS NOT ANY MORE. |

Once again, another Conan movie I saw in Korean before Japanese. I thought it was pretty good for the most part, though I still seem to keep missing too much of these movies when they come on. I have to say Korean VAs really fit the roles of the characters as well.
This Conan flick definitely had more action that mystery to it, but hey anything to make Gosho Aoyama happy (although was this his idea originally?). |

Not one of my favorite DC movies, but still really fun. I tend to prefer the random mystery episodes over the Men In Black episodes--with the MIB episodes I never get the feeling that the writers are serious about the mystery behind the group and turning Conan back to normal(though I've only seen a little over 300 or so episodes.) But Gin is great because he's such a truly bad bad-guy--with DC a lot of the murderers end up being more likeable than their victims. I really like the character designs--kind of cute ina rough oddball way.

None of the more recent movies have tried to claim that they were in the U.S. In the third one, they clearly went to Osaka (not Alberta like it would have been if they had continued with that nonsense about Harley/Hatori's hometown like they'd done in the series), and they talked about Russians coming to Japan and such. They appear to have stopped butchering things so badly. Naturally, the name changes remain, but now they're clearly in Japan and are no longer trying to claim otherwise. It's a nice improvement. Now, as for this movie. I'd definitely say that its mystery is the worst of the movies so far. Overall, it was quite weak and definitely came across as an afterthought. However, the action stuff was so much fun and the return of the Men in Black was so welcome that it was definitely a blast. This isn't my favorite Case Closed film, but it was definitely good. |
