Great Review, I might going decide on purchasing this. I could imagine how will Evangelion 2.22 will come out. I'm just wonder why they do keep changing the voice actor for the english dub of Evangelion.

the irreplaceable Spike Spencer back to play Shinji

Well, he could be replaceable with somebody who is actually talented.

Seriously, Spike Spencer is probably one of the biggest reasons this character gets so trashed in the fandom. The Japanese VA made Shinji a soft-spoken weakling, but Spencer decided to exaggerate him into this over-the-top cartoonish super-wuss frightened of his own shadow.

He improved a little for Rebuild, I'll admit, but still doesn't sound right for the role.

Really? I always thought the original Japanese performance sounded much too bland. Making the character sound whiny fits exactly right.

Anyway, I fully anticipate that many may disagree with me on that, but I've always been a fan of the original dub. Only recently have I come to admit that some of the minor supporting performances really weren't that great.

I've never understood Shinji as intended to be whiny per se, he's just sort of weak and wavering.

"Bland" is actually better for him, because it's very much what Shinji is, at least on the surface.

Spencer's Shinji just made me want to punch him in the face every two minutes. He instantly became more likeable when I switched over to Japanese, or at least sympathetic.

There was a lot of that going on in the original dub, though. Over-the-top exaggerating. Par for the ADV course.

i saw maybe 20 minutes of it and compared to the tv series it did feel very rushed. animation is miles better though. yeah, adv's dubs were mostly garbage. that's why i always laughed when they started including english voice actor commentary tracks on all their anime dvd's. who wants to hear commentary from a no talent english voice actor? that's some great extra there. i mean there are a few good ones, but adv's dubs mostly sucked balls.

the same amount of fan service as the original series saw, including the classic scene where Shinji gets caught off-guard by the appearance of Misato's pet penguin.

Funny you should mention that...

I need to rewatch the movie, as I don't remember the new character being hinted at--must just be poor memory. Will certainly be double-dipping for the BD release at some point though, as I want that improved PQ; will give my copy of 1.01 to a friend/fellow Evangelion fan.

A lot of the actors who worked on the original ADV TV series dub 10+ years ago have either left Texas or left voice acting entirely. It's kind of hard to re-cast the same actors if you don't know if they can still pull off the same performance, or if you don't even know where the heck they are.

And I also didn't care for most of the secondary cast in the old Eva dub. On the strength of the cast list alone, I'm looking forward to the Rebuild dubs being better.

Someone's never heard the Najica Blitz Tactics commentaries, which are great whether you like the actors or not Cool

I thought it was quite well done, with all the action and mind games. Even though I haven't seen the entire original series, which is why I'm watching Rebuild of Evangelion, it was quite entertaining and I can certainly see what the fuss was all about. Looking forward to the next one.

Also hope a flamewar over which version was better won't happen on this forum.

If you have the 1.01 release then the value of upgrading to this one is questionable unless you have a full set of proper equipment and place a high priority on maximum available video resolution.
Or if, you know, you want to see what's going on in dark scenes (especially noticeable during the spoiler[battle with Ramiel] during the climax).

Three reviews for the same movie on ANN, but this is definitely the best, most fair one yet.

I keep hearing comments about how condensed and choppy this first movie really is. When I first saw it, yes, it felt condensed. But then the more I watched it—I’ve seen it about 5 times now—the more well-done and standalone I honestly feel this movie really is. It says everything it needs to say and contains all the vital information it so far needs and manages to streamline it into a coherent narrative. It's also exciting and engaging for itself. I’ve showed it to a couple other people who’ve never watched the original series, and they were able to follow it just fine, and it ended on such a cliffhanger that let it be known there’s more to continue the story.

And I also liked the original ADV dub, which is actually very decent for the time it came out. When you compare it to truly crappy dubs like say, the Patlabor series or Interlude, the Eva dub is actually very listenable in comparison and is alive in its own way. And I don’t care what anyone says, I think Spike Spencer worked just well for Shinji for the English version, as does Allison Keith for Misato, although Brina is definitely doing a good job filling in Amanda’s shoes as Rei.

It should go without saying the more I watch the first movie, and the more I watch the trailer for the second movie, the more I’m looking forward to the second movie. I could spend $50-70 for the import Japanese release this May, but I think I’ll just torture myself and savor the wait for the inevitable future domestic release.

Interesting comparisons there. Looks like I will pick up the BD version then. I wonder if we will get another re-release of the TV series and/or original movies on BD sometime.

Hmm. Maybe I should watch it sometime. I wonder if it's still available for purchase... yep. No surprises there. Added to my "wish list".

The Blu-Ray version brings the expected upgrade in picture quality, but its value varies from scene to scene.

So, does this mean the BD is using SD upconversion?

Kudos on another good review, Key. Although I've not seen this series, I'm tempted to now. I won't start off with this movie, but it'll help reinforce my upcoming purchase. I've always thrown this series out of the cart before hitting submit because of that very controversy, as well as it being a mecha series.

Nothing against mecha, but I still shiver from anime all those years ago when giant robots where the theme of the day. Thank goodness for "moe", though I can see its ripeness is about to spoil.

My interpretation of this was compared to the translation notes found in Pani Poni Dash or other offerings. What I didn't know was these can not be turned off.
If you should run across this in future reviews, will you please let us know this?

I thought SF had ripped from a fan sub site when I saw these and couldn't turn them off. Time to compose a letter to Sentai Filmworks and request the feature be an option. Best offer one to Section23 as well, just in case.

Nope, Funimation have managed not to mess things up on the encoding front this time.

Actually there are certain on-screen text-based jokes which make absolutely no sense unless you know what the translation is:

i.e. Shinji bursts naked out of the show, and the camera is angled in such a way that a large beer can is strategically placed in front of his genitalia...only for Misato to move the can out of the way, revealing a smaller jar, which still manages to conceal him...you wouldn't know unless the translation notes are turned on, that the label on the jar says "toothpicks"

Meanwhile, yes, the problem is that most of the second or third-tier voice actors simply moved out of the industry -- remember, even for the Director's Cut in 2004, ADV simply couldn't find many of its own voice actors after seven years.
