Just so you know, the first season of IS sold at least an average of 33,813 units per volume (both DVD and BD, and that's only from data Oricon reported), so this is actually quite a hit to its sales numbers. |

I am also questioning why IS is a big seller. I mean from what i've heard it contains one of the densest male characters in the history of anime and is chulk full of fanservice and a couple fights.
I mean if that's it.............why is such a thing so popular? I mean HxD should be a top seller to if that's the case. |

I'm kinda glad Machine-doll is selling cause it ended so horribly I demand they make a second season to try to answer some of the stuff left unanswered from the first one. Seriously worst season ending ever....

Blu-Ray sales in Japan have far less to do with the actual quality and general reception of a show than one would think and more to do with a combination of other factors like packaging, name brand recognition, extras, genre, install fanbase from the source material and other things that probably wouldn't even make the list of factors most of us would consider. There's certain types of shows that no matter how good they end up being will never sell more than a few thousand copies at best just as there's certain shows that are guaranteed to sell at least a certain bare minimum just based on name alone (i.e Sword Art Online, Monogatari, Just about anything from a Type/Moon source), sometimes before the first episode of a season even so much as airs. In IS's case it probably has something to do with the current popularity of Mecha Musume as well as a keen insight on fanservice and referencing of otaku gags. Right now three big trends I'm noticing are Mecha Musume (stuff like IS and Arpeggio of Blue Steel), Idols (Stuff like Love Live, iDOLM@STER, Wake Up Girls) and shows that strongly target the fujoshi audience (Uta no Prince, Free) are the safest bets to try when it comes to stuff that will probably move a lot of copies with relative ease. |

Non Non Biyori is at 10.4k, fyi.
That is false, it is important. Non Non biyori was well received and sold 10.4k in its first volume. Aku no Hana was hated and sold 200~ copies. Although rewatch value is also important. Why buy an expansive BD-set if you're not going to rewatch it? Just 2 examples, but the more liked shows do sell more. While the shows that get a lot of hate do badly. Which also explains the huge drop of IS2(Over 50%!). It should be noted that this is how the show is liked in Japan, western opinions have no influence and this. Just because a lot of people like the show in the US/Europa, does not mean Japan loves it just as much, or vica-versa.
If you mean extra's, then yes those do affect sales. But outside of event tickets/figma's(super sonico), I don't think they have that large of an effect on sales. I doubt the packaging itself has a large effect on the sales.

Which means the genre is well-liked, so its not rocket science for it to sell more. Although genre does not have that big of an effect. SoL's can sell a ton(K-on!, Lucky star etc..), or do terrible(KKK, Love lab, Sketchbook full colours etc..). Same goes for harems(IS vs. Photo kano)
Which means the series is well received.
Aside from shows that have no rewatch value or 3min shorts, that is false.

I know, right?!! I mean I understand that there's a demographic for everything. And that there's a big, big demographic that likes their ecchi harem. In that case, why is IS that much bigger than Highschool DxD which has way more fanservice and a male character that actually likes the opposite sex. |
