Oh, does this movie project perhaps have something to do with the intensifying in recent years of Japan & Russia's Kuril islands dispute?

Oops, I see that's already been discussed under earlier posts about this movie. It'll be interesting to see what kind of reception this will get in Japan.

Rare an anime these days that try to tackle heavy issues.
(Even Miyazaki glossed over it in his last film.)

The bit about the children's choir was amusing, and its interesting to see Night on the Galactic Railroad show up again, I really should get around to watching it sometime.

Looks like an interesting concept. Though I wonder about the historical accuracy of projects like this, the fact that they consulted a Russian history professor is encouraging. The other thing that worries me, is oftentimes when an anime decides to include a foreigner it's simply for the purpose of giving the Japanese male protagonist a fetishized blonde love interest. I will give the movie a look if it ever gets released here though.

I had a chance to read the interview and I was really delighted that this project happened. I hope that this will get a screening and possibly a release in the US. It just goes to show you that there is always stories out there that need to be told. And we definitely need to see more features like this. I really hope this comes stateside.

The one thing that impressed me about this production is the VAs, that they decided to have two different ethnic groups be dubbed for the production giving to the realism of an actual community that lived side by side.

Something different for a change besides harem shows, magical girls, and general anime weirdness. And Miyazaki may not reign forever. He deserves all the credit and awards he has gathered, but it is nice to see other people trying to capture a similar spirit and essence he has pioneered in his films. At least the portrayal of children and their hopes and dreams against the backdrop of harsher realities. I am so thrilled for Mai Mai Miracle on KS for similar reasons.

Watching and waiting now.

And thanks ANN for the interview! I love getting to know the people behind the anime and manga I love.
