The contest portion was adorable. That and the Lopunny VS Sableye scene.

Here's hoping this special will have an English version eventually. Smile
I can't wait to see the Mega forms of the Hoenn Starters in action!

Perhaps she might be the starring character in which the show is centered upon?

Only if Ash is in it. The anime preview for Black and White and this actually look a lot better than the garbage they air now.

And I happen to be a fan of that "garbage". Not to mention, the XY season has been animated somewhat more like this and the B2W2 short, rather than the "flashy light show", panel-based animated battles the series used until now. And while there's no real way to explain away Satoshi/Ash's age thing, the characters (including him) this season are very well-written in comparison to the nearly character-less Best Wish! series.

I'm not going to disrespect your opinion, but still. A lot of people in general seem to be turned off of the anime so much that they don't believe it when some of the fans of it say that the new season went up in quality a lot. It's not like we're saying everyone needs to watch it, or that every episode is ggreat, but if people are going to say that these shorts are better than the current state of the long-running show, then they're going to want to back that up with something other than "because Satoshi/Ash isn't the protagonist". I might've personally agreed during the BW seasons, but not now.

The problem with the main anime is its just been going on too long. Nobody wanted to watch Ash for 17 years with no conclusion. If they actually ended his story it would have been better.

The current XY anime is OK, but Serena barely does anything beyond shipping and isn't handled as well as May or Dawn were.

The show is constantly making the top 10 weekly anime ratings every week and the character is very popular in Japan. It's only Americans who seem to have a problem with him for some reason. Maybe the American dub writes him poorly and they get a bad impression from that?

I can definitely understand the dislike of using a character who doesn't age for a linear, plot/story-based series (rather than an eternal comedy series like Yokai Watch or Shin-chan), so I can't really argue against that, though I definitely think they're not handling him badly this season.
Though if you're watching the English dub, then I can't judge the voice acting, but I can tell you that you're behind the Japanese broadcast by a bit. I'm happy to say that just like the "Corni/Korrina" arc, they've started a "Serena" arc where she has been figuring out what she wants to do with her life and how to pursue that new dream. And from hints of the future, some of the team's Pokemon, including spoiler[her Fokko/Fennekin] are set to evolve even further. It's not Diamond&Pearl level characterization and development yet, but it's hard to compare when it's obvious at this point that they're still building stuff up, compared to D&P, which is already complete. No guarantee that it'll be pulled off well, but they haven't disappointed me yet.

Oh, and on the "Serena likes Satoshi/Ash" thing... Maybe it's just me, but I feel like they've been handling it quite nicely. She's not completely obsessed over him like Takeshi/Brock was over older women, and likewise, it's not being treated as a gimmick like such things have been treated in other anime, and like Pokemon is so used to attaching to its characters (poor Citron/Clemont...). It doesn't show up every time they do stuff, and when it does show up, it's more or less just a "cute" moment where Serena associates him as her inspiration. The only exceptions to that I can think of are the three moments when she got jealous/nervous: Once when the kindergarden teacher said she'd have Satoshi/Ash "go out with her" if she won (in which Serena found such a condition ridiculous--it was a misunderstanding, of course), once when Satoshi said "So cute!" to the Fokko/Fennekin on the screen and she thought he was talking about the Tripokalon Queen idol girl, and once when the Poffle girl came in and realized Serena had a crush on him and basically threatened to take his hand before her (she was joking, and was doing it on purpose to get Serena upset). Those seem quite natural and the fact that they're isolated incidents (3 moments in 50 episodes) makes me feel better about the whole fact that she has romantic interest in him and that he hasn't realized it yet.

--------

tl;dr - I think the only people who have any right to judge are the people who are watching it. It's not the greatest thing out there, but for the Pokemon anime, it's got a lot of elements that people have wanted in the anime since... well, forever. And Serena liking Satoshi/Ash hasn't gotten out of hand in 50 episodes. Good progress, if you ask me.

Don't even bother with the sheep bandwagon haters, x/y anime has been great.
And if these anime without ash do well, we may get a whole adaptation of the manga.

Really my biggest problem with the show is the fact almost every episode has become the same exact thing. Team rocket makes crappy plan X, Y, or Z, it succeeds for 6 seconds, it proceeds to fail, nothing gets resolved in the episode. I just want the Pokemon anime to focus on Pokemon, battles, gyms, legendary Pokemon, etc. Like the game does. I completely understand it's not the game, but that's my primary reason for not enjoying it. It's essentially a bad comedy based off a game.

Ratings as a good gauge though? I mean, ya guys have problems about The Simpsons, Family Guy, et. al. yet those shows still get good ratings and very popular. So does that mean your problems don't exist?
