Does Love Live! have an incredibly diverse fan base? It seems like a show that the typical older male otaku would like but it seems to have a lot of merchandise aimed at women. Then younger girls like Moa from BABYMETAL say Love Live! is their favourite anime.

I am not at all surprised by this.

After all think about it for a second how many girls want to be singers and or stars.
Also look at the actual show it is very much like kon in that its all about the music and their relationship to each other.

@Callum: I have several [female] friends who like Love Live because they're interested in the idol industry and they do covers of LL songs. Plus, cosplayers would be interested.

The show's original audience was young girls (middle-high school) interested in the idol life, and they publicly target young girls in their major campaigns, so it's no surprise to me. However, as you said, there is also no surprise that lots of otaku are into the series as well. I'd say the main audience are young girls in Japan, and a good number of its side audience are otaku. This is coming from when I was last in Japan (Fall 2012), though, so things could have changed by now.
Grade school girls seemed to be more into Aikatsu, Pretty Rhythm, and PreCure, though.
