20th Anniversary DVD, so in the next 10 year we can see a Megazone 30th anniversary Blu-Ray Disc.

One very small nit-pick correction...

Streamline only released the first MegaZone 23 OAV in the states. The second part was dubbed into English by Harmony Gold (both Carl Macek projects, thus sharing some actors and resulting in confusion for decades), but was released as a bonus LD IN JAPAN, as an "educational" dub, with Japanese subtitles. Neither the second nor third parts to Megazone 23 were released before ADV's recent DVD's.

Ironically, the Japanese subtitles were pretty far off from the English version. Even more ironically, the names were changed to ridiculous American names. Shogo Yahagi became Johnny Winters, Yui became Suzy Sue, and so on. Streamline dubs may have strayed pretty far from literal translations, but they seldom (if ever) stooped to anglicizing names.

As an interesting historical note, the "international version" of part II included the alternate ending for the first part that was commissioned for the ill-fated Robotech Movie. The Robotech movie was originally cut exclusively from the Megazone 23 OAV, but the distributor wanted some more tie-in with the Robotech TV series, and ordered Macek to add in some footage from the already-used Southern Cross TV series. (Macek objected -- Megazone 23 was much higher budget animation and was shot on 35mm, whereas Southern Cross was standard cut-rate TV animation and shot on 16mm -- it would look like crap on a big screen, and stick out like a sore thumb among the Megazone footage.) They also didn't like Megazone's bizarre non-ending, and commissioned this new animation to give it a standard happy ending. The Robotech Movie was test screened around the country, and performed so badly that the distributor, the now-defunct Carloco Pictures (the low-budget Russian-owned studio that released the original Terminator), never released it. (The quote I heard was something along the lines of, "it sent audiences running from the theater vomiting." Wink

Only a few older otaku have seen this movie, and I'm dying to see it myself. Everyone I know that's seen it says it's absolutely retched. A few of us were hoping ADV would resurrect it, after buying the rights to all of its parts, but alas...

jsevakis, You seem to know a lot about this title, Were you one of those who worked on it, or just one of those "older otaku". Wink

I remember seeing what I think was the OVA on the Sci-Fi UK channel. I loved the BGM. I could tell that a lot of the story seemed to be missing, especially about the lovely Eve. I hope ADV will bring it over to the UK R2.

I may be an old time otaku, despite not being that old... :p

Actually, Megazone is one of my specialties. Back in my fansubbin' days, I did the entire trilogy. I went absolutely nuts on it -- I actually crafted a new intro to Part 2 and added additional sound effects because I thought the foley track was weak. (Mind you, this was 1996, so that was unheard of at the time.) And of course, I had to translate EVERY SINGLE CREDIT.

God, I'm getting old. I actually have CD's that are older than some of the anime fans these days.

You should see my vinyl collection. I still have my first LP I ever bought, which was Sargent Pepper by The Beatles. Cool

you're absolutely right. it was never released 'officially' until recently. i was lucky to get a copy of part II in 92'.

and to answer your ruminations on 'the untold story': you do NOT want to see it! it is really, REALLY BAD!' i HAVE seen it. i even have a copy of it. one watching is enough. it's an abortion! Shocked

i wanted to see it when i was younger! i was WRONG.
it's worse(much) than clash of the bionoids....

just wanted to let you know...
