Rose of Versailles' Oscar

In the above photo, an unidentified runner in the Tokyo Marathon 2011 portrays Oscar François de Jarjayes, the protagonist of Riyoko Ikeda's 1972 manga The Rose of Versailles and its 1979 anime adaptation. In the series, Oscar is the youngest daughter of a man with no sons. Her father, General Jarjayes, decides to raise Oscar as a man and teaches her how to wield a sword and ride a horse. As an adult, Oscar becomes the commander of the Royal Guard, which protects Queen Marie Antoinette throughout her love affair with the Swedish Count Axel von Fersen and the French Revolution of 1789.

The Tokyo Marathon 2011 took place on February 27. According to the Washington Examiner, this year's was the fifth Tokyo Marathon, and over 33,000 people participated. Ethiopian Hailu Mekonnen won the race with a time of two hours, seven minutes, and 35 seconds.
