London's Japan Foundation to Hold Lectures on Japanese Cinema

Five lectures between June 13 and July 11.

The Japan Foundation in Russell Squre, London (map), has announced a series of five lectures on Japanese cinema to be held on Wedneday evenings in June and July, under the heading Japanese Cinema for Busy People.

None of the lecture descriptions mentions anime, but some of the speakers, including Jasper Sharp and Dr Rayna Denison, have commented on anime in the past.

The lectures are free, but they must be booked in advance, as places are limited. To book, send your name. and the lecture you want to attend to this email: [email protected] . (You can apply for as many events as you want.)

The lectures all begin at 6.30 p.m. and details follow:

June 13 - Writer/film curator Jasper Sharp on the technological and industrial developments in Japanese cinema in the 1950s.

June 20 - Lauri Kitsnik on literary adaptations in Japanese cinema.

June 27 - Julian Ross on the meaning of 'independence' in Japanese cinema.

July 4 - Writer and film critic Tony Rayns on the relationship between Japanese directors and stars.

July 11 - Dr Rayna Denison on the current state and trends of Japanese cinema.
