Grandpa Shares His Love of Gundam With Giant Wooden Statue

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

A grandfather wants to share his passion for Gundam with his grandchildren. What better way than to build a two-meter (about 6.5 feet) tall mobile suit out of wood? That's what 66-year-old Kenichi Okada decided to do. The project took him eight months and when it was finished, the Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam statue weighed 40 kg (~88lbs).

He gave the handmade statue a plastic model feel by using water-based paints and used imported, lightweight timber. He said the most difficult part was forming the spherical shapes.

Okada admitted he started the project to please his grandchildren, but the kids took no interest in it. A staff member and Gundam fan from the Japan Agricultural Cooperative recommended the project and it's now on display within the JA branch's lobby in Kakogawa, Hyogo.
