"Cup no Sokoko" Figures Explore Life Under the Cup

posted on by Chris Nishijima
The "Cup no Fuchiko" toy line takes a new twist to show you a flatter side of Fuchiko.

"Cup no Fuchiko" is a popular series of capsule toys from manga artist Katsuki Tanaka and toy company Kitan Club. It takes its titular character, Fuchiko, and places her in positions which allow her to sit, balance, teeter, or hang precariously from the the rim of your cup. Unfortunately, it seems that this time around, someone wasn't paying attention when they set down their cup, as the new line of toys, titled "Cup no Sokoko" portrays what Fuchiko's lookalike Sokoko would look like after the cup has been set down on her.

Sokoko has been arranged in a total of six different positions, to be sold in random selection boxes: "Heading-Out Sokoko," "Hugging Sokoko," "Prostrate Sokoko," "Dreaming Sokoko," "One-Legged Sokoko," and "Waking Sokoko." There is also a secret seventh figure for those who are lucky enough to pull the right one. Sokoko is to be placed directly under the cup, sticking out in a fashion similar to that of the Wicked Witch of East. Once you pick up your cup for a drink, her flattened form is revealed.

This set will be available starting August of this year and will cost 300 yen per try (about 2.93 USD). Of course, if August is too long of a wait, or if you just can't stand to see poor Sokoko being squashed, Kitan Club is also releasing the third series of the standard "Cup no Fuchiko" in June.

"Cup no Fuchiko" also released a collaborative line of Puella Magi Madoka Magica cup toys last October. This isn't the first time that Kitan Club put its characters somewhere you wouldn't normally expect to find little people, putting Fuchiko's friends An and Min in ears across Japan.
