Ghibli Airs Special on Totoro, Mononoke Scenery Artist

The Japanese broadcaster Nippon Television will air "Totoro no Mori o Kaita Hito. Ghibli de Hakken! Nokoshitai Nippon no Gen-Fuukei" ("The Man who Drew the Forests of Totoro. Discovery at Ghibli! The Original Background Drawings of the Japan We Want to Preserve"), a July 28 television special on Studio Ghibli background artist Kazuo Oga. The 10:30-11:25 a.m. special will profile the man who drew the nature scenery in My Neighbor Totoro, Only Yesterday, Pon-Poko, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and most of Ghibli's works.
The special will also show the real-life Shirakamisanchi mountain locale that became the backdrop of Princess Mononoke, the mountain flower field that served as the model for Howl's Moving Castle's opening shot, and the real-life house in rural Genma Prefecture that inspired Satsuki and Mei's house in My Neighbor Totoro.
Oga and famed narrator Sayuri Yoshinaga (Taro the Dragon Boy) will provide the narration. The Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo is hosting an related exhibit from July 21 to September 30.
