Utsurun Desu. 4-Panel Manga Adapted into Live-Action
posted on by Egan Loo
The BeeTV mobile phone television service is producing a live-action program based on Sensha Yoshida's Utsurun Desu. four-panel "nonsensical" gag comedy manga. The manga, which used a stable of off-the-wall characters to tell jokes that defied logic or reasoning, was already animated into a video series this year. Arata Furuta (Blow-Up Doll, 20th Century Boys, Ping Pong) will play the main character Kawauso, while female talent and model Akina Minami (live-action Maison Ikkoku finale, Pokémon: Giratina and the Sky Warrior) will play Micchi. Comedian Takanori Takeyama of the comedy duo Cunning will reprise the same Kabuto-Mushi Saitō-san role — thus named because his hair is shaped like the horns of a rhinoceros beetle (kabuto mushi) — that he played in the anime version.
The original manga ran in Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits magazine from 1989 to 1994. The first of the anime's three monthly volumes shipped in Japan on August 21 on DVD, and also on mobile phones. The new daily live-action series of 50 one-minute episodes will premiere on BeeTV on October 26.
