Author: TMS Animating Children's Book Kubbe as TV Series

Norwegian Åshild Kanstad Johnsen's picture book about young log boy

Norwegian author Åshild Kanstad Johnsen revealed on her blog on Friday that Japanese animation studio TMS Entertainment (Lupin III, Detective Conan, Anpanman, Zetman) is developing her children's picture book Kubbe lager museum (Kubbe no Hakubutsukan in Japanese; Block Makes a Museum in English) as a television series. The book revolves around a young log boy named Kubbe (Block, or literally "log" in Norwegian) and his adventures in nature. Norwegian publisher Gyldendal describes the story:

There are so many treasures out there, he thinks. He takes all these treasures home and puts them in nice boxes. But one day all the boxes are full! So Block opens a museum of his own. The museum is a great success. Almost too much so, Block thinks ... is he really supposed to have to queue up to go to his own bathroom for the rest of his life?

Tetsuro Kodama (The Bears' School director, Mardock Scramble: The First Compression CGI director) directed a 90-second trailer to promote the book's Japanese release, and the book's Japanese website posted the video on Thursday:

Gyldendal released Kubbe lager museum as the first book in Johnsen's series in May 2010. After the book appeared at the Bologna Children's Book Fair, TMS began negotiations to license the series and make related character goods for release in Japan.

A Kubbe restaurant, "Kubbe Kafe," is opening at Musashino, Tokyo's moi café to celebrate the book launch. The café will display Kubbe art, offer a Kubbe menu, and sell character goods such as postcards and handkerchiefs.
