Moribito Designer Asou to Draw 009 Re:Cyborg Manga

Film slated for October 27; pop-up cafés, 9 Cyborg character posters revealed

Kenji Kamiyama's 009 Re:Cyborg film is inspiring a manga adaptation by Gatou Asou, the character designer of the film and other anime such as Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit. The June issue of Square Enix's Monthly Big Gangan magazine will launch the manga adaptation on May 25.

A poster campaign began last month to promote the film. Posters featuring the film's nine cyborgs and their powers were posted in train stations across Japan. Characters include: 001 Ivan Whiskey (Russia), 002 Jet Link (USA), 003 Francoise Arnoul (France), 004 Albert Heinrich (Germany), 005 Geronimo Jr. (USA), 006 Chang Changku (China), 007 (Great Britain), 008 Pyunma (Africa) and 009 Joe Shimamura (Japan). Theaters will also feature pop-up cafés with drinks inspired by the characters, as well as a chance to win copies of the posters.

The feature film, which is Kamiyama's first in full-3D animation, reimagines Shōtarō Ishinomori's classic science fiction manga Cyborg 009. In the original manga, the secret Black Ghost organization transforms nine unsuspecting humans into cyborgs. However, the nine cyborgs turn on their masters and protect the rest of humanity from Black Ghost's plans for world war

Production I.G and SANZIGEN Animation Studio are co-producing the film; Kamiyama already produced a 3D Pepsi Nex ad with Cyborg 009 last year. The film will open in more than five Asian regions simultaneously, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and South Korea.

Club Sunday, the free comic website of Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine, ran a separate two-part manga finale to the original Cyborg 009 story on April 13 and May 11.
