Manga version of popular novel focuses on Fukushima students after March 2011 disaster

This year's December issue of Kodansha's Dessert shoujo manga magazine began publication on Wednesday on a new manga from creator Reiko Momochi (Confidential Confessions) titled Daisy ~3.11 Joshikosei-tachi no Sentaku~ (Daisy ~3.11 Female High School Students' Choice~).

The manga, based on the novel Pierrot ~Yoake Mae~ by Teruhiro Kobayashi, Darai Kusanagi, and Tomoji Nobuta, tells the story of four friends at a girl's high school in Fukushima Prefecture that is feared to have been radioactively contaminated. One of the four committed suicide a month after her college student fiancee told her that he was afraid of having a child with her because he did not want an unhealthy child. The story will deal with subjects such as the fear of radiation and the guilt felt by inhabitants who took refuge in other prefectures. The manga will be split into six chapters.

The original novel went on sale this April, and gained popularity through social media services such as Twitter. The book sold approximately 30,000 copies in three months.

Tokyopop released Momochi's six-volume Confidential Confessions manga in 2003-2006. The company also released the Confidential Confessions: Deai two-volume sequel series in 2006.
