AKB48's New Single Sells More Than Any Other Female Group

posted on 2014-03-05 22:26 EST

AKB48's 35th single titled “Mae Shika Mukanee” (I Won't Face Anywhere But Ahead) sold 1,091,000 copies in its first week of release. The single debuted on February 26, and features the graduation song for idol Yuko Ojima. The amount of CDs sold for the single surpasses any other idol group in Japan's history.

Only four other female artists — all solo artists — have performed such a feat: Yumi Matsutoya, Ayumi Hamasaki, Hikaru Utada, and Namie Amuro.
