Baby Rosalina, Pink Gold Peach join game as playable characters

Nintendo streamed a Nintendo Direct presentation dedicated to its upcoming Mario Kart 8 game for Wii U on Wednesday. The game will ship on May 30 for US$59.99 separately and bundled with a Wii U and accessories for US$329.99.

The presentation features previews of:

  • The "anti-gravity" race tracks that allow players to race along walls and even upside-down
  • Car, bike, all-terrain vehicle, and prancer customization
  • New characters, including the Koopalings, Baby Rosalina, and Pink Gold Peach. The game will include 30 playable characters, including the option to play as a Mii
  • New items, including the Boomerang Flower, Piranha Plant, Crazy Eight, and Super Horn
  • A test of which vehicles have the advantage on which courses
  • The online multi-player mode up to 12 players, either with friends or online players
  • Online tournaments that can be held at specific times
  • The ability to play against a "ghost," a record of someone else's track run
  • The Mario Kart TV that allows players to take video records of their races and upload them to YouTube
  • A live performance of the game's music

The presentation ends with a new trailer:

Players who buy the game and register it by July 31 will receive a free download code for one of the following games: New Super Mario Bros. U, Pikman 3, The Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker HD, or Wii Party U. A similar campaign in Japan is offering Nintendo Land, Game & Wario, and The Wonderful 101 as options instead of Wii Party U.
