*shudder* Origin.... you missed out harping on the Japanese voice cast, who utter their lines with zero emotion whatsoever. Add it to a pile of movies where you should listen to the soundtrack but avoid the film like. The. Plague. It is really bad.

Listening to the rest now.

Love Hina Again needs to replace Breakin'2: Electric Boogaloo as an anime exclusive joke title for a sequel that shouldn't have been made. I can't think of a worse title for a sequel. For example instead of Code Geass R2 it would be Code Geass Again.

Personally I don't think it's that bad at least compared to the really bad harem anime like Dear S, or Eiken. In terms of sequel theirs several other series that I think where worse. The whole thing seemed to have been Ken Akamatsu trying to expand Love Hina after it became a hit, and he just decided to drop it. My problem with it was that its unbelievably rushed trying to fit two whole volumes in I think 3 episodes.

I despise people who proclaim that Something is satire when it's clearly not like Eiken or Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt (thankfully they stopped saying that once PSG actually developed recurring villains)

Personally I will defend Gundam Seed Destiny as only the second worst Gundam anime simply because Durandal was a pretty good villain, and it had some interesting ideas like Meer Campbell starting out as a Lacus fangirl before she became obsessed with replacing the real Lacus Clyne. The music is also pretty nice especially Stella's theme. The Extended where worthless, the battles are some of the worst in anime but it at least has some good points.

I agree on the last worst anime being a troll.

The intro was hilarious, Zac. Really enjoyed it! Very Happy

OMG! Justin! spoiler[Sou Ryuuden] SO deserves a reboot. I would love to see what Production I.G. would do with this, since they have illustrated how well they can do book adaptations. Now is the time! (The book series is finished, isn't it?)

Zac, you win my love for Fifth Element, but lose it on Moulin Rouge, a.k.a. Cliches: the Musical!

... and then win it back with Almost Famous. Stop toying with me! Laughing

You guys speak highly of There Will be Blood, and I agree that in terms of cinematography it is stellar, but man, the characters. You can tell this was based on a work by a socialist, because the two leads are basically just socialist propaganda types: the heartless industrialist tycoon and the hypocritical religious leader. They have 0 depth whatsoever. They are walking cardboard cutouts. I suppose one could argue that makes them "archetypal," but to me it made the movie as flat as the gorgeous landscapes upon which it was filmed. I had to drag myself to finish it on DVD, I just did not care about the story or the characters.

And if I can edit this post for like the fifth time, I don't know what my top ten list would look like, but it would definitely have Bladerunner, Lawrence of Arabia, and Ran near the top.

Well, the OVA cannot be defended but the manga can be. Once I read the manga I saw that the OVA actually played it straight. The manga is hilarious and takes the harem genre and fanservice to such a ridiculous extreme, not to mention that Densuke is actually a pretty dirty-minded guy (he keeps thinking of the dirtiest possible way the girls can get into without the manga becoming hentai-esque and it's hilarious how dirty-minded he really can be), but the OVA tries taking everything straight and it just sucks.

But, of course, no one is going to believe me. Oh well.

I will say that I was happy to see Justin include Gundoh Musashi on his list. I do wonder how much of it Justin has seen, though, because the show somehow becomes worse and worse from a technical standpoint as it goes on. Yeah, having Musashi use a gun is ridiculous, but from what I could tell (11 episodes without English subtitles) the show's story had a neat twist to it and could have been a somewhat fun comedic action series... But the production values of the show seemed to want to top itself in suckage the further you go in.

For example, in episode 11 there's a scene where Yukimura, Saizo, and another of his warriors are on screen. Yukimura starts talking, but rather than animate Yukimura's mouth, Saizo's mouth is animating! And when Saizo actually starts talking, the third guys mouth is animating! And it's not like it's fully accidental, as the lip-synching is actually pretty spot on with what's being said! You can't accidentally do something like that... It really is like Monkey Punch gave the studio the money to make the show (he apparently was a partial-owner of the studio) and instead of making a competent show from it they instead seemed to waste almost everything on booze, spent the rest on women, and simply had the interns make the show.

I am not kidding.

More Kiss x Sis bashing? Why can't you stop enforcing your judgement on us, you puritan snobs!...Just kidding Razz

Really good list, Justin mentioned a few obscure ones which I now feel like seeking out to satisfy my morbid curiosity.

On Pompoko, Zac I'm surprised that you didn't say anything about the Magic Racoon Ballsacks. Yes, cultural differences, I know, but christ...

Oh great - last week, those chumps didn't think 5 Centimeters Per Second belonged on MY top three list and now they don't think His & Her Circumstances belongs on MY bottom three list, grrrr, grrr.

Anyway, here's my reasoning from the thread Zac started in the Community Forum requesting people's Top and Bottom 3s:

Quote:
This one particularly gets my dander up because of its potential. It has some good stuff in it, but any flecks of gold are buried under a groaning mountain of absolutely insane repetition.

Anyone who doesn't remember the ridiculous amount of rehashing that that series did is simply repressing their memory. I realize this is a favourite for some people, but surely there are those who can understand why it is painful for others?

I loved the film, but let's be honest. It's a love it or hate it title. Even T.H.E.M. panned it.

If it were American, you'd hate it, too

I'll admit it could've had more going on for the supporting characters, but it's not the worst by a long shot.

Justin: So you hated the recent dominion tank thingy, but you liked the crap-tastic '94 OVA? 'Cus that's an equally big disappointment in my eyes.

Genma Wars TV

Really wanted to like that, too, 'cus I actually enjoyed Harmageddon.

I'd back Zac up on the Pom Poko hate, I'm not a fan of Takahata to begin with but I could never make it through that movie. Like Zac said it was boring and the environmental message is beaten into you something fierce.

Yeah, I know a least three people on Twitter who really like KisXSis and find it absolutely hilarious. I kind of understand the popularity behind shows like it. In Japan a lot people don't have siblings so they don't know what it's like to have one. So of course there are people with fantasies like that. Oh well, whatever gets money in the industry is good I guess.

Are there any websites that will point me in the direction of more movies like the ones in the top ten best lists?

Good show pretty good opening too.

Okay Im gonna have to admit The Matrix: Revolutions is on there simply beacuse im a fanboy but hey its nostalgia mixed with a 13 year old "OMG this is so awesome" feel. It has a special place in my heart.

Okay here we go Redline *sigh* I've said this before on the forums but Ill say it again. This movie was and is still being Incredibly Hyped. I will admit this movie has style but thats all it has going for it. I understand people love style but I dont go to the movies pay an extra amount for special service and posters (which I did and REGRET) to watch a motion picture book. I was so bored in the theater all i did was close my eyes and wait for the final race the music was good it fit the style so i cant say i was completely bored, think Tron: The Legacy (except Tron actually has a story to give a crap about)

I've heard people saying "this is anime coming back to its hayday", "they need to make more like this" bla bla bla really??? No really!!?

Obviously Im a little passionate about this but as a last point to stress my point of view, how many of the top 3 Anime lists had visually based anime on them?

I own Pom Poko but haven't yet watched it. I will soon I think hehe

Not done with the episode yet, but anyway...

Yes, Violence Jack was a bit too offensive for my tastes. Can't really enjoy it "ironically" or otherwise.

I've tried to look into Yoshiki Tanaka's other works given the quality of Legend of the Galactic Heroes myself, so it's definitely disappointing to hear that Legend of the Dragon Kings got such a terrible anime adaptation. I certainly didn't know about that. Oh well...I guess we could say Tytania needed some company if we want to be a little too cynical about this sort of stuff.

Cyberteam in Akihabara and Saber Marionette J both have character designs by Tsukasa Kotobuki, who apparently also got to work on Battle Arena Toshinden (a terrible, terrible show directed by Masami Obari back in the day) and Dante's Inferno (mind you, I have no idea about this one).

Needless to say, I'm not surprised to see such infamous works represented on your list and, somehow, joined together by the threads of fate. Laughing

I'll admit to seeing an advertisement for Genma Wars on an obscure TV channel and thinking it could be vaguely interesting because Shotaro Ishinomori of Cyborg 009 fame was involved with the manga version, but yeah...the less said about that, the better.

Slightly disappointed at not finding Ninja Resurrection on anyone's list though, but then again...it's not like there was little competition. Wink

Now, it's strange, because I imagine that the anime I think is terrible is nowhere near as bad as some of the horrible anime Zac and Justin have seen. My idea of "bad anime" are the ones that make me the angriest or are the most painful to sit through, but some of these do have fans.

Painful Anime:

1) Tenchi Muyo OVA 3 - Like I said, this isn't so much the worst anime ever so much as it makes me angrier than anything in anime has ever made me angry. Tenchi Muyo may not be a masterpiece, but to take a big sloppy dump on it with this terrible written sequel that pretty much ruins any potential the OVAs had was maddening and every second was painful to watch.

2) Lupin III: The Columbus Files - I'll give you my description from my MyAnime entry for it: "Possibly the worst animated anything ever forged. Truly a monument of failure, it's like they took all the elements that didn't work in past Lupin adventures and heaped them all into this horrible cliche-fest. If Monkey Punch ever watched this (and I doubt he has, since if he did, he'd immediatly die from a heart attack) he would hang his head in sorrow. How can Nabeshin do so wrong?" A bit melodramatic, but I do still largely feel that way about it. This was actually the first anime I saw that was physically painful to watch. I actually own a copy of it, because I bought a whole boxset of Lupin movies. I have not seen it since the first time.

3) Rumbling Hearts/KimiNozo - This, I'll say this about it, it's not my kind of anime. I don't do sappy romance melodramas or h-game/visual-novel based stuff. But nevertheless, I saw this, and it was terrible. It's impossible to care which girl the bland lead chooses, because he's such a waste of animation. The coma girl is supposed to be mentally disabled too, right? Is that supposed to be some warm fuzzy thing, that he has sex with a mentally challenged girl? The art and animation are horrific, the soundtrack is forgettable, and I just can't stand watching characters like these pouring out emotions that their personalities can't sell to me, and visa versa.

4) Gundam SEED & Gundam SEED Destiny - Bland characters, Sameface character designs, concepts that the writer is clearly not intelligent enough to tackle, and severely lacking in any geniune emotion, the CE era Gundam shows are so lacking in personality that "bad" is actually a little over its head. Neither show even has enough personality to make it to the top 3. They're just such a waste of animation. It's like somebody decided to make remakes of the original Gundam series and Zeta Gundam, but decided not to include any of the charisma of its characters or gripping drama. Sure, fine, maybe Destiny is worse than the original SEED, but at this point, it's all the same nonsense to me.

5) Anything Peter Chung has done that isn't Aeon Flux (Reign the Conqueror, Matriculated). Stop it, Peter. Stop it, stop it, stop it. Your work is boring and stupid. Enough with the cod pieces, too.

Like I said, a lot of these are probably way too mainstream to be "worst ever". There's shit I've watched and forgotten about because I've blocked them out of my memory. Aside from "so bad it's good" there are some anime that are so bad they etch themselves in your memory, like the ones above. But there are also ones that are probably worse but you've blocked them from your memory either for your sanity or because they were forgettably bad.

My favorite movies list is probably the result of not watching a lot of live-action cinema. So brace yourself.

Favorite (Live-Action) Movies

1) The Shawshank Redemption

2) Fight Club

3) To Kill A Mockingbird

4) From Russia With Love

5) Serenity (that's right, Zac, the Firefly film)

Also, I loved Moulin Rouge. But I found Rushmore to be annoying. When it wasn't being boring.

I have frankly learned my lesson about arguing about Gundam but I will just say that Peter Chung only did the character designs for Reign. Adult Swim just really made it seem like Peter Chung actually had something to do with the story.

Blame Sadayuki Murai, and Yoshinori Kanemori for Reign.
