There is one title that comes to mind when I think of this: Taiyo Matsumoto's Black and White. This manga never has or never will gain the noteriety and respect it deserves in America or even Japan simply because of just how diffrent it is. Its art style heavily influenced by Europian comics, and this surreal style alone is enough to make many people dismiss it without a second thought. For one, the art is very good. Filled with detail, it really creates a vibrant world while your reading. The story and characters are just as good. With only three volumes, the characters are more interesting and develop better than characters from much longer series. The story grabs you and makes you think. One of my personal favorites. Its currently out of print from Viz, but if you find one of the TPB pick it up right away.
Any other recommendations (and please don't put something like Inuyasha and justify it by saying it should be topping the mainstream book chart)? |

Well, there are a few mangas over there than deserve a better reputation that the ones they had. I can't explain too much of them, but, for example, I'd say Saikano. It mixes a great story with characters really great designed and with an art really nice. Also, at least in Europe, the volumes are a bit cheap for being so fat...
.
Er...I could think of more. Maybe Azumanga Daioh also deserves something better. However, if I find something interesting to say, I'll come here again |

AzuDai does not qualify since it's one of the more popular titles.
I guess I would say YKK fits in this category. It's a slice of laid-back, easygoing life. There isn't a huge overbearing drama-filled storyline, but I like that. And the art is very good, especially when the chapters are done in color. Sadly, it may be one of the "Best manga no one has licensed". I really want a hard copy but I don't want to import it until I absolutely have to. |

Both Saikano and Azumanga are popular series and have sold well for the time they were released (I'm not sure about Saikano sales, but considering the anime's popularity I doubt it will do poor). This is a topic for mangas that few people are reading despite their high quality, not under-rated series.

Black and White volume two has been sitting on my shelf for about a month now. Haven't read it yet (want to start from the beginning), but I love the art.
Has anyone here read Icaro? It's a collaboration between Moebius and a Japanese artist. From what I've seen it has some of the best art I've ever seen in a comic book, but when I went back to the store with money it was gone. |

That artist is Jiro Taniguchi, one of the most acclaimed modern manga artists out there. The art in Icaro certainly is exellent, so much so that it overshadows the writing. The dialouge doesn't have as much depth as I hoped, and much of the characters really aren't that interesting. The symbolism in it (ideas about a human spirit reaching for freedom) is far too simplistic in my opinion. Its not really bad, just average writing. It does have some of the best art out there, so I guess that could justify a purchase, but I was expecting alot from this work and was kind of disapointed. But still there are tons of manga with incredible art and incredible story/characters, so it really isn't that special, especially with the ending. My current favorite artwork (yes, they do change) is Berserk (volumes 20 and above are simply amazing). Also Mushishi deserves recognition for its incredible enviroments.
If you like Icaro's art, check out Benkei in New Youk. A very good noir story thats only one volume. I got into it because of a review Warren Ellis wrote (you should know who he is |

Cyborg 009, Captain Herlock, Lupin III. All three of these have great artwork but many think that the artwork is weird so they don't give it a chance.

Many people don't like the artwork of the Lupin manga, some say it's over detailed. I don't understand that. |

There is a very good manga called Shounen Shinkaron (The Theory of Boys Evolution) it has 3 volums so far in Japan and still running ,it is a very cute manga by Toshigi Kusanagi-sensei , but unfortunatly not a lot of people knows about it ( I searched a lot for it on the net but I could'nt find much ) It is a shame that it is not licenced by Tokyopop or Viz (AHHHHHHHHHH I WANT TO READ IT
Anyway the story is about Sana, 14, a boy who tries to find his place in his father’s shadow. Because Sana’s father, 29 years old Naoki, is also known as Asou Mizuki, a top idol who is supposed to be 16, Sana has to hide his identity. The task is hard since Sana is his father’s perfect portrait, and people tend to think Sana = Mizuki, to the point that when his father can’t go to a show he’s been invited to, Sana often plays his role. Moreover, Naoki has quite a tough character when he’s not Mizuki. Sana has to cope with this situation. Even though he doesn’t show anything, Naoki loves his son and tries to help him, in his own way. ( I took the info from a site * Image Garden* ) I think this manga desserves some atention for the great relationship between the father and the son |

I really dont think enough people have read Battle Angel Alita *GUNNMN* but it's really good.
I hope it gets a better look at by Viz's marketing department because it would sure gather some more readers. |
