Even if it's just a one season show. This mainly applies to romance style shows that like to build a relationship up for 13-25 episodes but never actually give the watcher the big pay off. This happens in alot of anime and was a bit of a trend with shows I watched ten or so years ago.

Alot of shows love to just leave things up in the air and then bugger off without ever feeling the need to tie the threads. Is that what anime creators masturbate to? The thought of not giving the watcher what they so desperately what.

I would list the shows but I really don't want to as we're not aloud to create lists. I've seen countless series where this happens though, is it some sort of spiritual thing the japanese have in not finalising an emotional struggle or do they find the idea of drawing cartoon characters kissing a bit icky?

I've never really seen a show deal with the proper relationship side of a romance, the bit after two people have started dating, I know alot of the intrigue is in the build up but I thought anime was supposed to be better than just fluff and falling onto girls knockers.

Different strokes for different folks. The "audience" isn't some fixed, never changing, absolute thing, wants and desires come and go with the tides. Mechanically making shows that appease EVERYONE is not only impossible, but something that the creative spirit has a kind of disconnect with. I mean, if you said shojo was going to catch on and mecha and sci-fi would die out in the 00's, people back in the 80s would look at you funny. And why? The "audience" changed.

Also, Japanese stories tend to be very open ended, they don't go into the final absolute details very often. Unlike the US, where everything HAS to be tied up in a nice little bow, or we go crazy.

Too effing right we go nuts. People who don't mind open ended shows just want to look poncy and arty and say "hmmm it makes you think" ... no it doesn't the writer just didn't have the billys to end the story properly. Why watch a show if it doesn't have a proper conclusion. Donnie Darko was great until they killed him with the plane, at least tell us why.

That's why Amagami SS freaked me out so much, that show was a piece of shit yet it earned points for actually ending each arch with proper endings apart from the chubby chick.

Maybe I'm just being "poncy" but I'd say that the movie actually does tell you why if you've actually understood what's happening up until that point. That movie may not spoon feed it's audience but it's not like the concluding information isn't there if you're looking for it. It's really not an issue of the open ended conclusions that you're complaining about.

As for actual open endings, there are really no absolutes. Like any aspect of a story it can be used well and it can be used poorly. Sometimes an open ending is appropriate. Sometimes it is more satisfying to not know than to be told exactly what happens. Of course, you're partially right though. Open endings can be and frequently are just a crutch that bad writers use to avoid actually ending their story properly.

Of course open ending is a plot device, but often it's used in wrong way. Usually in harem shows where tying up the main relationship would require finishing everything else. It leads to stupid situation like in Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu sequel. In first part their relationship evolved to the point when something had to be said, but it wasn't. In second part they still behave in the same way that in case of two teenagers is just unnatural.

Without having a list of anime you are referring to I am just going to go with a couple of possibilities about 13-26 episode romance anime.

Possibility A.)The show's producers did not know if they were getting another season. So they were left with making a non-conclusive ending so that the story can be seamlessly continued in the manga, if there is one, or make the ending open enough for the possibility of getting a TV renewal.

Possibility B.) The show's producers knew they were only doing a one season anime and wrote an ending that was unintentionally(crosses fingers) cruddy.

Fanbase A: I ship Naruto and Hinata
Fanbase B: I ship Naruto and Sakura
Fanbase C: I ship Sakura and Sasuke
Fanbase D: I ship Naruto and Sasuke

You can see how 'giving people what they want' isn't that easy.

Why not? What's easier than making hentai where everyone with everyone is happy ever after. Very Happy

Kind of split on this. I would like to see conclusion and not hide behind a plot element because they hope for another season or couldn't come up with something. But I think of DBZ and how the audience back then wanted Goku over what Toriyama wanted to the direction to go and ended up kind of out there near the end.

I think a mix would be nice. Just not sure how to execute it. I guess I would like something like Ugly Betty if a romantic anime. Looked like being with the main person, kind of implied, but not directly told but "obvious" if you believe in the pairing.

To be fair most of the romantic comedies end the anime way before the actual end of the manga.

In the manga 99% of the time they do have a decent ending.
spoiler[
For example in Love Hina it shows Naru & Keitaro get married, and of course at the wedding a bit of the usual shenanigans happen (Keitaro accidentally steps on Naru's wedding dress and she is in her underwear really quickly, then she beats the living crap out of him).]

spoiler[Another example is in Ai Yori Aoshi where it shows Aoi & Kaoru had sex (not too graphic, but it is pretty nice) and then later them living together. Of course it also shows all the other girls were kind of sad that Kaoru picked Aoi (especially Tina).]

Well to make this simple and to the point. Not everyone is going to be happy. Usually the fans are wrong and well just stupid. If the artist always did what the fans wanted nothing would ever get done and even more people would be unhappy about it.

The one who creates the art does their best job to What I believe is the best of their ability and hope to sell it. When you get to the point of just pleasing the fan base then you are just going to push people away, since the fan don't even know what it is they want.

Also depends on the series too. I good number of series our often based on a manga and most often those series haven't concluded yet. In part is hope for another season but really its more in part to not make their own conclusion seperate from the original source material. There are exceptions and times where the teams for the adaptions are very creative or the original creator okays or askes for a different story or ending, but generally most series don't tread on the originals story in terms of the ending.

Other time it is a cause that it was a series for kids and that's just not really the focus of the series in regards to shonen or action series. They want those elements for character dynamics but they keep in mind that that isn't what kids want (although you do get alot of pokemon questions of "will Ash end up with X"). As for shojo, it depends on the series again. If it's based on something then you have the issues before. If it's an original series then you have what TitanXL talked about.

You also have to take into account of how other cultures deal with things like intimacy. In Asian cultures, public displays and casual kissing is a bit on the uncommon side. Kissing is also more associated to sexualized intimacy rather then love and affection in the west. So what we may consider to be lacking or open ended, they might find it adequate or even deep. Declaration of love are very serious while in western culture, we use the word love on various levels where context is more important then the actual word at times.

Also I think it's weird to think that US series AREN'T open ended. While episodes work in a manner of being self-contained, the overarching stories rarely seem to finish. Lately more and more series have been able to actually end, but alot of series get cancelled or abrutely end in the US. I like animes cause they actually have an ending rather then the fact they ended because they were cancelled or didn't get another season. Animes seem to better pace themselves at least when it comes to the issues of not getting another season.
