The other thread on here reminded me of this show. I thought Plantes was amazing--except for the dub--and have always wanted to find something in a similar vein to watch.
I thought about this show in the past but shrugged it off, as I did with many other shows. As there'll be nothing for me in the coming Summer anime season, I'm looking to see the shows I missed. Though I don't know if this show is any good. ANN only reviewed Volume 1, it would seem, and the review wasn't definitive, and someone caused the old forum thread to be locked before anything really relevant could be posted there. The description sounds cheesy, but I'm sure the description of Planetes would be equally as cheesy IMO, had I not yet seen the show. So, is it a worthy successor/equal to that? Is it at least a "good" show? (no plot holes, illogical character development, empty endings... those sort of things) The show is also not readily at hand to try: ANN lacks it, Crunchyroll lacks it(of course, it isn't a softcore pr0n), and I don't know where else to legally look. Another important question is does the series have any extras? The review said that the first DVD did not, but what about the subsequent dvds; do they have extras, physical or on-disc? If so, are they in the S.A.V.E version? |

Planetes is infinitely superior in every aspect except for quantity of cursing and T&A. Moonlight Mile wins that category.
The first season ends not really on a cliff hanger, but I think they introduce some majorish sounding plot points in the final few episodes that never get addressed. Basically, I think they let you know what the second season is going to be all about, but that one never made it over here so it's sort of a tease. (Also, the girl on the far left in the encyclopedia picture isn't even in the first season, I don't think) I have the SAVE edition, and I'm fairly certain there are no extras. The girlfriend is sleeping so I don't really want to go rummaging through the box o' crappy anime in the closet to be certain. Some things just aren't worth the risk 
As for where you can get it... If I haven't dissuaded you, it's so cheap you might as well just buy it for $.87 an episode including shipping. And there was nothing wrong with Planates' dub!

I find Planetes over-rated. I struggled to finish it whereas I had no trouble blasting through Moonlight Mile. It bums me out that no fansub group every completed translating the second series of Moonlight Mile and it doesn't look like it will ever be licensed in R1.

While I'm a stranger to the "underbelly" of the internet, in my search to test this show out I scoured the internet, and found many possible, ah, links for the 2nd season. Though as I wasn't interested in the second without seeing the first, I didn't pursue them, so I can't tell you if they were complete or not
I found it disheartening that many renown sites pulled down their "copies" of Season 1 because "Funimation had licensed it." I guess they didn't care about ADV's claim? Well, it's natural. Evan Stone instills fear, when he isn't breathing fire and wearing bathrobes in public (According to Funimation representatives, albeit facetiously)
ADV lacks such a figure, then and now. Back to the show, it truly lacks extras? That's rather sad, though I've heard that extras on dvds are up to the drive of the director and the abilities of the budget. While Christine Auten is a regular actor, she is seldom director, and even if she had ordained extras to slap on the dvd, in 2008 ADV probably didn't have the money. 
Planetes was loaded with extras, and they were most all Japanese cast extras (thankfully). Though I am annoyed that Bandai has apparently failed to put all of its extras from the individual dvds into the collection, but at least it has one of the cooler DVD menu screens I've seen. For under 11 bucks, I don't see how I could go wrong, but I'm still unsure on the whole thing. Presumably no extras, and few glowing reviews. I think I'll pick it up and see how it goes. |

You mean this collection? All the Japanese cast commentary is there, it's just really unintuitive to find, and IIRC they aren't even labeled. I think there is a circular control panel if you go to the specific episode selection menus that have commentary, you can toggle it on and off there. Alternatively, you can press the "Audio" and "Subtitle" options on your dvd remote and cycle through them while watching the episodes that have commentary. I'm at work right now, but I'll look at them when I get home to be sure. |

I see what you mean. Apparently some of the Planates singles were actually two disk editions and I guess the second disk has the missing extras. Because you can still see that the individual SKU numbers printed on the collection disks match the SKU numbers on the single releases so I think for the complete collection they just included the episode disks and left off the extras disks.

As I recall, MM also had multiple copulation events and the chick in Planetes didn't even get kissed. That aside, I can't think another video production -- anime or other -- that maintained better fidelity to known science with regard to how life in outer space would be. |

Personally, I'd take Planetes, and even the other Goro Taniguchi directed real-sci-fi epic Infinite Ryvius over Mooonlight Mile as well. Moonight Mile is still worth watching though if you like down to Earth Sci-Fi, but the story doesn't feel complete even after the second season. I'd also point you to the recently released TO as well.

Infinite Ryvius didn't make a real impression on me, sad to say. I've seen the first half(?) of the boxset I have. The dub and the sub were both pretty hum-drum, and I saw it heading towards being a "coming of age" story. Societal issues in hard scifi are fine by me, I mean I liked Planetes, but the issues it presented were a bit more unique. Plus I get tired of all the protagonists of shows being punk kids.
