I'm Christmas shopping and I'm looking for age appropriate recs for my nephew. He's 11 and likes Harry Potter quite a bit. He's seen The Matrix and liked that for the action. He was into anime over the summer (Because of Yu-gi-Oh!, I think.) and made some attempts at drawing manga. He's a fairly smart kid. A little on the geeky side - Oh, okay, a LOT on the geeky side.

Is Shonen Jump mag appropriate for his age group? What manga GNs other than Yu-gi-Oh! do the wise people of ANN forums think he might enjoy?

I hate to just get him more Yu-gi-Oh!. I'm trying to be the ultra-cool Auntie here. I have been in the past because I've been able to produce Harry Potter fandom stuff and teh really cool video games. I want to do the same thing this year with manga. Help me stay the cool Auntie? Cool

Hello there! Congrats for being the "cool Auntie" and encouraging your nephews interests. Below i found a link that you might be interested in that could ultimatley help you pick a new manga for your nephew to read. i hope its helpful to you!

http://www.wisegorilla.com/ !
From that link scroll down to Manga and Anime, click the link, then scroll down to Books, click this link, and it will take you to a server not accessable through an IP address, as well as the manga listings for kids. my apologies for the computer jargon. But please, Enjoy!

PS- may i suggest InuYasha? its a great anime on cartoon network and its targeted for young teens. You'll be able to find a blurb about InuYasha on the site i gave you.

Hey! Thanks for the response! I got an error message on the URL, unfortunately.

I didn't think of InuYasha. I've seen it on Adult Swim and I've always enjoyed it with a sideways grin. It seems a little shoujo for him.

Thanks for the idea, though!

ETA: Got the link update thanks!

hey no prob. Anytime.

but as for InuYasha being Shoujo, i dunno. i know many guys who watvh and read InuYasha. And if your nephew ever gets into anime aimed towards adults (im not meaning Hentai!), how would he be able to know which is Shoujo? There's many unisex manga. And InuYasha is versitile in that way. Within InuYasha you have a plot that holds girl interests with the love triangles woven in the show, and boy interests with the fighting and more adult language used. There are alot of maturer themes being used in this anime than meets the eye. I just started watching and reading InuYasha not too long ago, my girlfriend got me hooked. I was skeptical too attempting to acknowlege an anime such as InuYasha as one anime that i would like. But despite the skepticisim i found this anime, and it manga quite entertaining. My favorite anime is Cowboy Beebop when it comes to a more darker, older teen anime. Akira is for adults only, but a good anime. well thats all i have for now. Sorry for this rambling. Let me know if i can help you with anything.

PS- come to think of it you've given me a good idea for a new topic to post, and it could help both of us. Thanks!

Just thought I'd mention something since you mentioned he likes Harry Potter. Negima, a manga a lot of people compare to HP, seems to be a nice story about young teens judging from the cover. Do not get that for him. It has quite a bit of breast and butt shots, and sexual jokes.

Well, he seems like he's a competent reader, so why not get him Naussicaa (sp?). I mean the movie was great, but the manga is even better. Sure it focuses around a young woman, but Miyazaki wrote it in a way that is simply appealing to all, and it's appropriate for many kids (not real young ones, though, but then again they can't read, so point is moot there).

You might want to try Kazan then. It is a 7 volume series released by Comics One. It's clean and easy to read but full of action. Here's the link to it on the Comics One website:

http://comicsone.com/manga/kazan/

And right now Comics One having a sale on all their sets through their website but I don't know if you would get it in time for Christmas.

There's also Dragon Knights. That's a fun series.

Naruto is probably clean enough but I'm not quite sure what the language is like. I've only read two volumes and that was a while ago.

Rave Master is another popular series right now too.

Shonen Jump is appropiate for teenagers 13 and up, but if you feel that he's mature enough to handle it, let him read it.

Thank you so much for the info - I was having the worst time finding the info! I honestly didn't want to buy a copy unless there was a strong possibility I would get it for him. His reading habits aren't up to me. I'm not about to make life difficult by giving him something that might give Mom and Dad a hassle later on.

Just get him one piece, it's about pirates and what kids don't like story about pirates, the story is safe. Maybe he's into a sport like wrestling, tennis, basketball or even street racing, there are manga that might interested him.

About getting manga for christmas, are you sure that's a good idea? Not that it's a bad present, it just seem underwhelming for the kid at that age. I know when I was a kid around 10 and I got clothes or books as presents, I would just say put them aside. But when I got something like a Ninja Turtle Action figure or the latest videogame, my eyes would bright up and I was really happy and excited to try it out.
Manga are definitely good present for manga reader though.

Really? When I was ten my favorite presents were books.

What version of the matrix did he see? Was it in the movies or on cable? That would help us guess what he is allowed to see.

They were my favorite gifts also.

I give him books a lot. He likes them. He's a bit of a geek like I am. It's one of the reasons that I am his favorite Auntie.

That's a tough one. He was allowed to see the uncensored versions with his Mom's finger firmly planted on the remote zapping the parts she didn't want him to see. So, I'm not completely sure what he saw and what he didn't. All I know is that he was very excited over it. He really liked the fighting, but I don't think he understood the concepts.

I guess that bloodless violence would be cool (not the blood sprays of Hellsing) and overt sex would be right out at that age. A central theme of romance would probably be in the yuck category.

So far, I have the following written down to check out when I go shopping:

    Hikaru No Go
    Kazan
    Dragonball Z
    One Piece
    Jing: King of Bandits
    Naruto
    InuYasha

I'll look at those when I go shopping and pick the ones I think he might like the best. I've decided that I'm not going to go with the subscription to Shonen Jump, though.

write down Naussicaa as well. From what you've said, he'd probably really like it.

Isn't there some nudity in InuYasha? I forget though. I was trying to think I don't think I can be of much help... when my brother was younger (but still older then 11) he liked Cardcaptor Sakura but if you thought Inuyasha might be too Shoujo well then I guess that's out of the question hehe, more recently when Tsubasa came out he ran right out and got that I don't know, maybe my brother's odd. Anyway he also likes InuYasha, Ranma 1/2 (which would not be a recomendation to an 11 year old), and MegaMan (which I've never read). I like Rurouni Kenshin which is Shonen Jump, but I've never been an 11 year old boy.

Actually, the first season of Yu-gi-oh was not broadcast in America. The first season, covered in the first couple of books, doesn't deal with the card game. If you find yourself leaning towards the same 'ol thing, you can be assured that the mangas are rather unique compared to the tv series right now.
