Yeah, I definitely felt very uneasy and depressed. I was wondering, does the manga actually explain anything in the anime? Because the fact that bad stuff was happening and there was no explaination as to who-and-why that I found it really frustrating and distressing. Is the manga worth getting? |

The manga basically continues the story from where the anime left off, although certain events happen a bit differently. I personally prefer the anime slightly better than the manga up to the point where the anime ended. I've wanted a continuation of the anime ever since I finished with the manga. I am not really an avid manga reader, but I purchased the box set of Alien Nine containing the three manga graphic novels and the dvd when I was left wanting more information after I saw the ending. I enjoyed reading the manga and was excited when I heard that another volume was coming out, which I promptly purchased. I thought the Alien Nine graphic novels were very violent and at times sadistic. A couple of times, I got a little queasy from some of the stuff that went on. Finishing the final volume, I was pretty satisfied with the conclusion after some thought, but there were still some explanations that I wanted from the story. I thought the Alien Nine manga was definitely worth my time, but if you hate to feel depressed and don't like gratuitous violence inflicted on aliens and humans, I wouldn't recommend it. This is not a happy series for the most part. |

By "shocking," does it have to mean violent? Because the most shoked I've ever been while watching an anime was Now and Then, Here and There. I mean, the first half of the first episode was so energetic and Shu was so... happy. And then, spoiler[boom! We're in another world and people are being beaten, girls are being raped, and I begin to feel like I may never smile again...

No, it doesn't necessarily mean violent, just anything that manages to surprise you, such as a sharp turn in the storyline that changes it significantly or the overall series having disturbing subject matter that is not explored often, are examples of what could be considered "shocking". Now and Then, Here and There is a good example you've given. |

Recently the most shocking anime I have watched was Oruchuban Ebichu. I thought it was a cute anime, boy was I wrong. spoiler[ Within the first 5 minutes, I started to wonder what I watching.... corrupted for life. Not really a spoiler depends, some people might want to be surprised.]

Well, I received the Neon Genesis Evangelion DVD Complete Box Set for Christmas and just recently watched it. I watched the series in 3 days and I new there was a lot of hype. But...I would have never expected it to be this good, it was remarkable, and left me sad at the end when it was finally over. There's so much action that actually captures how there life is on the line with more emotion than just some habitual screaming. I can't really explain it in words but it is a great series that I will watch over and over again.

Well, as a follow up of the original post, I will say the most shocking anime would be G Gundam. I was expecting another war story, told with an Imagawa, Robo-ish, slant. I was horrified after a few minutes by what I saw. The sheer non-Gundam aspect of it went far beyond what I could imagine. Now I just dismiss it as another non-UC Gundam series, but at the time it was harder to dismiss.

^My first impulse was to immediately change the station once the earsplitting theme song came on. Luckily I gave it a second chance later, as it was good but definitely not like the other Gundam series at all.

I've heard of this title before it became part of an April Fool's joke on this site. I'd really like to see if anybody would have the guts to try to license and sell this title to American audiences. Oruchuban Ebichu seems like a very bizarre piece of work that I would definitely want to see just because of the strangeness of it. I would be extremely "shocked" if there is even a chance that this title could be licensed for the U.S. market. |

I've seen some shockers like Kite Uncut, Mezzo Forte, various other H stuff and some episodes of Gantz, but for sheer brutality nothing beats Saikano as far as I'm concerned. Look what they did to the poor kid, spoiler[cutting her heart out was only the start].

I understand your question and sentiment perfectly, for it was Hellsing. I'd seen movies with the center being on vampires and such, i.e. Vampire Hunter D and Bloodlust and non-anime movies of the same idea, but when I saw that series for the first time I was completely blown away because I really wasn't expecting what it was, for me it was more hardcore than I was used to at the time. By at the time the most violent and bloody anime I had seen was Gundam Wing...yeah like I said at the time.
