A short but interesting article about the way hip-hop is starting to make its mark in Japanese pop culture, and the hope that it will help end racism in Japan. |

That was interesting. I've noticed that articals about Anime and Manga in newspapers have become rather popular lately.

That was perhaps one of the few articles by Charles Solomon that was not an absolute piece of crap.

I have friends that are hip hop artists that have toured over in Japan. No one that most of you have heard of, but they do very well over in Japan. Hip Hop is very very big in Japan nowadays, and I can see it moving to Anime.

Didn't read this article, but I agree he writes a fair amount of dreck; in contrast to the positive reception Koi Kaze received here, he called it "Cherry petal-strewn slush" on Amazon. If he thinks that's "slush," he obviously hasn't seen enough cutesy throwaway high school romance shows. |

Cutesy throwaway shows are slush by definition. I can believe western hiphop acts that haven't hit big in the west can do very well indeed in Japan. Maybe we should have a cultural exchange; we send them hiphop acts that will do better there than here, they send us J-pop acts that will sell better over here than there. |

I know that my friends make about 100 times more over there than in the states. It is all supply and demand.

Yay! Samurai Champloo fighting stereo types one episode at a time.
I'd honestly like to see real hip hop in anime, not just S.C.'s turntable gimmicks. I haven't seen Tenjho Tenge. |

Just curious what do you mean real hip hop? Not sure what you've been listening to, but I believe that the hip hop score/music throughout the series is phenomenal. Adds to the atmosphere and overall feel of the series without being too distracting. |

There is a difference between rap and hip hop though, most people don't understand. You see, hip hop is a style, not a form of music.

Nothing will end racism anywhere. Espeically Hip Hop/Rap. What bugs me is the notion that Hip Hop/Rap is needed to impress the Japanese attitude towards African Americans from a lower people to an amusing people. The US didn't make laws banning "colored" sections for buses and water fountains because the Caucasians liked "colored" music. It took waaaaay more than that. I also don't like the one way bridge in this cultural gap here. It's now okay for a young japanese youth to have "black" music playing among his peers. But having a young African American blast Jrock/Jpop music around his peers would just invite a lot of stares. |

Motown did as much for white acceptance of blacks as any other aspect of the civil rights movement.
And I got black friends who love J-Pop. |

sounds like a cool place. If i lived within driving distance, i would. Maybe I'm wrong. But i do speak from personal observation on this one, and that's where my opinion comes from. And I watch too much TV. Last edited by Isaaru on Fri Jul 29, 2005 3:19 am; edited 1 time in total |

I heard Vanilla Ice's career survived in Japan after he flopped here.
