I just read the preview of Gintama in Shonen Jump, and I must say, I'm not really impressed. Playing Jump Superstars, I got the impression that it was a surreal, crazy comedy, similar to Bo-Bobo, but a lot more refined and less random. However, upon reading it, the comedy just seemed dull. There were very few times I was really amused. The serious stuff just didn't work well either, since I had already seen the same themes treated better elsewhere. Are there many fans of the manga, and does it get better? Or is it another very mediocre shonen manga I should avoid?

It was an unexpected hit in Japan, doing very well in sales and with every new volume it manages to get in the weekly top 10.

But to be honest, I found it to be quite dull too.
I'll have me some Cromartie High School thankyouverymuch.

That makes three of us. I didn't get even one decent laugh out of it.

I'll chalk up the number to four...as I was hardly impressed by the first chapter.

However, I would still like to read more of this series, at least the first volume, to get a better grasp on it. Maybe it gets better? Like Necros said, Jump Superstars does give the series an interesting appeal that I would like to experience.

On another topic, has anyone tried to visit the Gintama URL that was put in Shonen Jump? I believe it was shonenjump.com/gintama, but I've yet to pull up anything.

Well I read 3 volumes, but there's nothing more to Gintama than what you already read. You opinion might change, but I doubt it. Its all episodic stories of the same sort, no real evolution.

The only thing that made me chuckle, was the author's rant at the end of a volume. His self-portrait is quite funny.

I'm hoping this stays in graphic novel form so I can avoid it, rather than it taking up any space in the magazine that could be better utilized as space for more chapters (3 instead of 2) of other mangas. Or if you refuse to do that, Viz, here's a crazy idea: how about returning to the first year of Jump, when you had seven mangas in the magazine, instead of six, a preview (that just got expanded to a full first chapter instead of half a first chapter that didn't really give you a feel for the manga), and a bunch of articles about things no one really cares about.

[OT]And while I'm ranting, I wish they'd take Yu Yu Hakusho out; I'm not really impressed with the original mangas the artist does as much as I'm a fan of the anime adaptions. You'll have a couple of real high-quality drawings per chapter that seem to be the source for the anime desigins, and then the rest seems really sketchy or rushed.[/OT]

i mostly agree with you about SJ, although i like Yuyu Hakusho. maybe if they did a bit more publicity for it like maybe PUT IT ON THE COVER AGAIN. It hasn't been on it since Issue 6, unless you count the really tiny pictures that are all like TWO CHAPTER OF YYH! OMG! Though i did like YYH a lot more in the beginning when he was dead. The first chapter was great. Now he just goes around fighting monsters.

And they need to start putting supporting characters on the cover instead of main ones. I think the only two were both Yugi and Jonouchi standing next to each other. I think putting a villain on the cover would be a good idea too.

Personally I think Sandland was good, they should do that same thing again with Cowa! or Kajika with only 1 and sometimes 2 chapters per issue. And since they took DBZ out, i kinda miss Akira Toriyama's stuff in the mag.

but i could go on and on with what i hate about SJ (like that @#$! editing - pun intended.) But the truth is i think it's awesome.

I've liked Gintama since I began reading weekly Jump. Very Happy

No offence: I don't think you guys can enjoy Gintama unless you understand the Japanese language and know about Japanese culture a lot. and it's hard to translate the witty Japanese they use in the manga. For example, Katsura is called "Zura" which means wig.
Anyway, Gintama is not a samurai manga like Rurouni Kenshin. Surprised

I didn't enjoy Gintama that much either. The type of humor reminds me of Cromartie High School: What? Um...okay then. Let's move on. I just didn't see anything promising about a cohesive plot line, which I prefer. The humor wasn't quite down my alley, and the plot wasn't that impressive either.

To tell the truth, I was looking forward to reading the preview of Gintama, since I heard it was really funny. Instead, I was horribly disapointed. The comedy couldn't even nudge a smile out of me and the intended serious parts couldn't be taken seriously through my eyes. Oh well, maybe it only really does make sense in Japanese.
