Hello, this is my first post on this forum, so I would like to start off by saying hello!
But now to the real problem, my fiancee and I have just watched the last disk in our anime collection, so we have kind of hit a dry spell. We would like to buy some new anime ... but nothing on the shelves look interesting enough to buy. Any suggestions would be appreciated! The only thing I ask is that people read My Collection list before they suggest something, so that I don't have to keep replying "Have it" Also, we do not have any interest in watching anything by Funimation Studios ... long story.... Thank you in advance for all the help! I look forward to fully participate on this board! animenewsnetwork.com/MyAnime/collection.php?user=Tetsuji&categ=5 |

I don't see why you won't buy from Funi but... since you seem to like comedy/parody (Excel Saga, Puni Puni Poemy, Abenobashi) and fanservice (DearS, Popotan, Maburaho), I can suggest to you Nurse Witch Komugi. It's only 6 episodes but it's a very funny parody anime. I highly recommend it if you liked those other titles. In addition if you would rather have the fanservice be left out you can try my personal favorite: Galaxy Angel. It's not quite as crazy as Komugi or Excel and the parodies don't really appear that often until the 3rd and 4th season but I found it to be extremely entertaining. An anime that got better and funnier the more I watched it. The fact that every episode was 15 minutes long as opposed to 30 really helped it IMO. The jokes didn't get as stale as many other animes, they came up with a new idea each time. It's different than other comedies but I can't really explain it. You just have to watch it. BTW you seem to have a lot of what seem to be bootlegs in your collection.

Thank you PantsGoblin for your two suggestions! I have heard many good things about both Nurse Witch and Galaxy Angel!
While I'm replying, I might as well add on to a couple of things PantsGoblin mentioned in his reply. First being my disdain towards Funimation. The first reason I dislike Funimation is DBZ. I know a lot of people seem to worship this anime, but I find it to be one of the most horrible anime's in existance. But the biggest reason I dislike Funimation is because they edit their anime's horribly, then expect real fans to buy the 'uncut' version well after the original has been in circulation for a couple years (DBZ is the best example). But because some of my friends and other people I know really enjoy a lot of anime Funimation produces, I am getting over my current funk (I really enjoyed Burst Angel, and Samurai 7 looks pretty cool). So I guess when I said I had no interest, I was exagerating a bit :-/ Secondly, PantsGoblin pointed out that I have a lot of bootlegs in my collection. Some are some are some are fansubs. Before I heavily got into the 'anime game', I bought a great deal of my collection from E-Bay and Amazon. I didn't even realize I was recieving bootleg copies until well after I spent a lot of money on them. But I have slowly been buying the originals and throwing away the bootlegs. Unfortunately, it is a very slow process ... and expensive. Rest assured that I no longer purchase bootlegs (or even buy DVD's online). As for my opinion on fansubs ... they are just as bad as bootlegs. Last edited by Tetsuji on Sun Jan 01, 2006 2:55 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Your disdain for FUNimation is a bit outdated. They've since rectified their DBZ mistakes, and they've been releasing nothing but quality discs for several years now.
In fact, if you like stuff like Excel Saga and Abenobashi, you might want to check out Kodocha, currently being released by FUNimation. It's a really energetic show that has its emotional moments, and I think it's something that a couple could enjoy watching together. |

I realize that they may have rectified their [Funimation] mistakes, but since I've held that disdain for so long, its very difficult for me to take them seriously. But as I said before, I'm slowly accepting their stuff again. And I will take your advice and watch Kodocha, it seems interesting!

Also, keep in mind that it's not the anime's fault for being produced by a company you dislike, it shouldn't stop you from buying an anime you like. I mean, I'm not a big FUNi fan, but I still buy their stuff, like Fullmetal Alchemist, Spiral, Fruits Basket, and Gunslinger Girl.
I suggest you check out something like Gunslinger Girl, I haven't quite finished this series, but I do enjoy it. Especially the different storyline that you don't see anywhere else, being it is very original..... huh, I couldn't find this anime in the encyclopedia.... |

I can't really think of anything to recommend (that hasn't already been recommended) in the parody category, but it also seems like you have a good deal of anime's with good plots, and action (for example, Gungrave, BERSERK etc.) For this category, i would highly suggest Last Exile, this anime has a great plot that will keep you watching, it has bits of romance, and some great action. I suggest you check it out.

Disdain against fansubs or not, this year has seen so many amazing shows (many ongoing) that won't see the light of day over in a long while that you are denying yourself a LOT of good anime. (School Rumble, Mai-Hime/Otome, Air, Shuffle, Blood+, Shakugan no Shana, Karin and the list goes on.) I really suggest you reconsider your position and enjoy some great shows while saving yourself some money.
If you absolutely positively need to blow cash on something as well, I would very highly recomend Haibane Renmei, Kino's Journey, Shadow Star Narutaru, Now and Then Here and There, Midori Days, His and Her Circumstances, Koi Kaze and Saikano. I also don't see either Evangelion or Rahxephon on your list, so if you have somehow not gotten around to them now would be a good time |

R1 Mai Hime DVD 1 Release 3-28-06 from Bandai (As has been discussed in other threads, Air probably won't see R1 release for a long time if ever, but I can see, for instance, ADV picking up Shuffle! as an etchi/magic comedy on the lines of Maburaho.) I feel like I've responded to too many recommendation threads lately, but I will speak up for Funimation-the Fruits Basket DVDs are like the crown jewel of my collection, because they represent great value in terms of price, (paid $70 for the set), episodes per disc (26 episodes in 4 discs), and extras (tons of extras, Japanese VA interviews, English VA interviews, galleries, character profiles, and more that I can't even remember), plus they feature a great English dub, a subtitle track that retains name suffixes and nicknames. Oh, did I mention that the show itself is a wonderful mix of heartwarming and tear-jerking drama, with enough interesting characters to appeal to anyone's tastes? In fact, thanks to Fruits Basket, Kodocha, and Gunslinger Girl, I voted for Funimation in one of those three poll categories last week. |
