I read one of the new Korean manwha books that hit the shelves last month and really enjoyed it. It seem that there is quite a bit of good Korean stuff, unlike most of the titles that TokyoPop had picked up.

The new, larger books really stood out on the shelves against the standarized "TokyoPop" size books. The larger books were also a lot more enjoyable to read.

I hope that the the larger style books give the standarized market a jolt. I'm tired of the one-size-fits-all formatting. However, I don't recall if the Danbu(?) titles cost more than the standard $10 lot.

Do you think the manga market will welcome larger, but more expensive books now? Will other companies publish larger books for the same price? I sure hope so!

I doubt they will, honestly. Viz actually did used to print in a larger format, but switched over. (Which really annoyed me 'cos now my Utena volumes don't match!) And isn't Dark Horse now re-printing Oh! My Goddess in a smaller size? If anything, more and more are going to the smaller format.

I've heard people complain about the $10 price for the typical size, so I don't think a more expensive, larger size would go over well.

I like the small ones, personally. Easier to carry in my purse when I need something to read. Large is nice, but smaller's more convenient.

Most American manga readers complain that even $10 is expensive for manga. Do you really think it would be a good idea for them to make manga more expensive than it is now? I'm quite satisified with the current size and price of manga. I wouldn't want my manga books to be larger because it would take up too much space in my already small room. I don't want manga to be more expensive than it is now because there's no need for it to be and it's at the perfect price. Even some of Viz' shounen manga are sold at only $7.

The current size of most volumes of manga covers roughly the same length of a volume of an anime DVD. What I mean is that most volumes of manga cover four chapters at a time which equal to four episodes per volume that most anime DVDs cover. Why change the size only to have it be more expensive? If you think the current size of manga is bad, you should've been around when manga companies used to release manga in single volumes that costed $2 for only one measely chapter. Manga is just fine where it's at and as long as you can enjoy it, why should there be a need for it to be larger and more expensive? And in all honesty, I think you're insane for actually wanting manga to be more expensive. What kind of money do you have that you can just blow off on anything that's expensive? Cheaper = good. More expensive = bad.

I am perfectly happy with the size of manga books now, especially considering that is the same size as they are in Japan. There's really no need to make them larger, at least not all of them. I really don't want to see any higher prices on things, because I've been enjoying watching manga prices gradually come down over the last few years.

I agree that $10 is a bit pricey for manga especially for korean manhwa which is relatively unknown here. I'm quite happy with the size and price of things now but I don't mind coughing out $10 for a manga if the artwork is good enuff to impress me and the storyline doesn't suck. I don't think I would snub a good manga just becuz of its size.

Btw, what is the title of the Korean manhwa you read?

$10 is too much for a manga? Do manga buyers know how much books costs? I buy alot of books, pursuing English major means major reading, so manga feels fairly cheap at $10. I also read comic books so I know that one manga volume has alot more material than 3 comic books at 2.99 each. The manga stories are also better the majority of the time as well as the artwork.

I too have no problem with the size of manga. Smaller size means more shelf space for more manga. As long as the manga does not become so small that it is impossible to read the font, the size is fine.

I don't think $10 is too much for manga (seeing as I pay that much all the time), but I wouldn't be adverse to it being a little lower. I know it's the same price as your average mass market paperback, but paperback novels take much longer to read than a volume of manga.

Also, considering the price of manga in Japan is at least half the price if it here.

I looked up the price on Amazon and found that the The Korean manwhas were only $1 more, selling for $11. Right now I already pay $11 for Nodame Cantabile and other people pay $11 for the rest of Del Rey's selection. TokyoPop up'ed the price on Planetes for a while too. I don't know how the extra $1 price is effecting Del Rey's bottom line.

There's no way I would pay $16 again for mangas just because they were large like I did for Fushigi Yugi, but just a buck? Hmm...

The title I read was Bring It On.

I think our titles are significantly bigger than Japanese ones. The Japanese Alice 19th ones I have are tiny, closer in size to the old Pocket mangas from TokyoPop. Even if companies made them tiny again for cheaper ($6), I don't think I'd buy them because I really enjoy the larger format.

English-language GNs are maybe half an inch taller than most of my tankoubon. The GNs are thicker too, but that's due to paper differences.

Most of the Japanese tankoubon I buy retail for ¥390, or about $3.30 US. Which I is why I buy so little English-language stuff; I can afford to buy twice as much stuff in Japanese, even with shipping costs figured in.

I wouldn't mind paying a little bit more for better quality books if it's a series that truely deserve it. Blade of the Immortal latest volume is about 18 dollar, with good paper (heavy and white), bigger size (6x8) and better print quality over all. Too bad Berserk wasn't release in a similar fashion. I prefer most of the seinen book to be bigger and better quality while the shonen and shojo stay the same.

And yes, Japanese manga are smaller in size and width than most English publish manga.
