I supposedly got my Haibane Renmei box set today. Opened it. Looked really questionable.
Did some research, found I was right. With all my internet buying from different vendors on Amazon, it was bound to happen eventually. What I got was actually the Haibane Renmei bootleg licensed by fx, which I found out as the final clincher on my theory was closed by this site here:
http://animefrontier.com/Bootlegs/getbootleg.php/29/
Sad

Of course I don't have money to buy the real version now, so I might as well see if I can enjoy what I got.

Still not 100% comprehension on bootlegs, so bear with me.

My question is, does anyone else get this? If so, what major problems did you see with the actual content? Did it have a crappy english translation? Was the sub all right? Video problems?

I would say if you got a bootleg stand up for yourself, and contact amazon.com. You should get some satisfaction if they are directing you to sights selling bootlegs. Either they can intercede on your behalf, and either get your money back for you. Arrange for a proper exchange perhaps. Atleast remove the sight from their listings.

I had a somewhat similar experience a few years back with a yahoo listed vendor. I pre ordered a game console through a retailer there. The day for the release came, and I got a note that they would send me one when they got some more. Well I checked the sight low and behold two available. Needless to say I was irate since the reason for preordering to avoid the risk of not getting.

Anyway I pulled my order through the legitimate means, and then got a nasty mail. Well that made me snap, and I reported the site to yahoo. Well within an hour I got a response. They told me to report to them if I did get billed, or if I did not get my preorder payment back. Then they told me the site would be removed. Which it was, not a few hours afterwards. Anyway I got all my money back, and to my amazement yahoo sent me a checkup email a week later to make sure everything had gone okay.

The point of all this is if you have been taken for a ride. First give the retailer a chance to rectify, and if they refuse contact amazon. I see no reason you should not be able to get satisfaction. I would not just deal with it myself. The official boxset is very nice, and all the extras on the four discs were very nice. What you got may not even work in your DVD player, it may not have proper dubs, it probabally will not have the real extras.

My oppinion is if your looking for the official then you probabally wanted quality to begin with, and you did not get quality. With that being said my oppinion you just got a payfor fan sub.

If you purchased the item through Amazon stores, contact the vendor to ask for a refund. If they refuse, go to the Amazon Stores A to Z and start filing a complaint. The one bootleg I ended up with through Amazon Stores was very quickly refunded, in part because the people selling them want to try to keep from getting reported by making the customer happy and pretending it was a 'mistake'. Don't sit idly by, get your money back. And then keep an eye out for weekly specials at places like The Right Stuf International, etc, to find a good deal on the real deal.

How can it be licensed if t's a bootleg? It wasn't licensed by fx, it was just copied onto DVD-9s by them illegally.

Also, sorry about the bootleg. Don't worry, it's not your fault.

Demand your money back and get the o=offical box for a little bit more. Wait until June when DDD run their annual 20% saving to save even more.

FX DVD are ripped from R1. Video are recompress, and only 2.0 audio. Even thought the video might look "good enough" on a standard tv, it is awful on the computer or a HDTV.

I figured I might as well check it in my DVD player, since I had the time. First line: "Where are I?"..................wow. The rest of what I watched was all right; not the best audio quality.

Sorry, not licensed, I should say made.

But thank you. I think I will file a complaint to amazon. So the vendor usually just refunds the money, no questions asked? I was under the impression stuff online wasn't returnable...or am I missing something?

I think I'll act pissy when I write them.

Hmm, that set was the last bootleg I ever bought. (I've since bought the real set, though.) Like others have said, fX bootlegs are R1 rips and are thus not "Engrish", though I can't imagine why they went with a 4/9 episode count instead of 7/6 Rolling Eyes The problem with contacting Amazon and the retailer lies with representation of the product. I know that many bootleg sellers will say, "Import set, 13 episodes on 2 discs" or something to that effect, and if they said that in the product description, they might be able to say, "Look, you received exactly the product that we described, no refund for you!" Now, if the bootleg was represented as the legitimate 4-disc set, then you might have a better claim. My advice on Amazon sellers is to always check the feedback with ctrl+F for "import" and "bootleg," and watch for prices that are too good to be true...that HR boxed set probably runs at $70-$80 these days.

Where did you heard that? Unless it's stated that all sale are final, you have a right to return item for refund if they don't meet your expectation or you have a good reason. Some seller are just jack-ass so I never buy from people that won't let you return.

I believe you have a good reason. I wouldn't even bother sending back the bootleg, just get my money back. But most people wouldn't go through the hassle of getting their money back. I guess you live and learn.

I have never bought anime online. Always from a store. Because I know that they will sell them all wrapped up. Or a good way to not get a bootleg is buy a Japanese version. I don't think the Japanese have as many problems with bootlegs as us over here.

Since you opened it, might as well watch it all and then try to return it.

I actually like shopping online because it is way cheaper and have you seen the selection online? Of course I only buy off of sites that are listed on ANN. I had never purchsed anything from Rightstuf, I had heard about them but never purchased until I read somewhere on here that sites that sell bootlegs are not listed... and this site was. I've never tried DDD, but Haibane Renmei at an extra 20% off after it's already $54, man I think I'll be checking to see when that offer comes up.

But I've never, and probably never will, buy any anime from Ebay, or Amazon. Not just fear of bootlegs but even more scary, their prices Razz.

One more thing, how much did you pay for that bootleg?

No. First of all, don't contact Amazon first. Contact the seller. And be perfectly pleasant, saying the item wasn't what you expected it to be, etc. Make them think you feel it was an honest mistake. Discuss your options. If they ask for the bootleg back in order to receive a refund, send it. You'll be out $4 tops, assuming you're in the US and can send USPS.

Mylene's letter to bootleg seller wrote:

To Whom It May Concern:

I just received the Sailor Moon dvds I ordered from you. However, these are not the official ADV dvds I believed I was purchasing, but in fact well-done bootlegs. I feel I am entitled to a full-refund, because I did not purchase bootlegs, my intention was to purchase the commercially released _legal_ boxset as was shown on Amazon.com.

I would appreciate it if you would contact me ASAP at [email].

Thank you,
[real name]

That wasn't 'friendly' by many means, but it was straight to the point and not "You idiot! You gave me bootlegs! Gimme money!" by any means.

Once you receive the refund (assuming you do, and in my experience, you do), then report them for selling bootlegs to the link I cited above. Sadly, I never reported mine (I had other things to worry about in my life at that time), but after getting tired of receiving feedback request emails from Amazon, I did write a calm, rational note where I gave them 2 stars, because they so quickly refunded my money and the transaction was smooth. I received a nasty note from the seller, responded that if they contacted me again, I would 'deeply regret not reporting them in the first place,' and shortly there after all of their bootlegs had been removed, at least from the Sailor Moon selection at Amazon. Someone else must have actually gone through the full rigamarole, even if I didn't. Needless to say, I was satisifed with the end result. I found what I was looking for on Ebay, and learned a lot about spotting bootlegs.

Recently, a lot of bootlegs in Amazon stores seem to be the price of the licensed versions. I think Amazon went through and purged a lot of the ones that were clearly bootlegs shortly after my own bootleg issue. Now to get around that, the sellers are being even more devious by selling them for full price, at least over in the Sailor Moon boxsets.

I shop Ebay a lot, and I've never ended up with a bootleg. I've only had one bootleg, it was through Amazon stores, and that was enough to teach me what to look for to avoid the same fate again. Moreover, there are a lot of non-auction/non-seller sites where you can easily get official stuff. Right Stuf and Deep Discount DVD are two of my personal favorites. To me, DDD sounds like it would be a bootleg dealer, but it's not. It's simply overstock.

Heh heh, that might be because there is a bootleg seller out there with "discount" and "dvd" in the title.

OK, to put a conclusion to the issue, I contacted the seller first, pretty much copying Mylene's letter and changing around a few things (Thanks Mylene). They apologized and said "they were out of stock so they had to order from another vendor"; They gave me their own returns dept shipping address Rolling Eyes and said they'd give me a full refund.

Just some info, the item description listed for this buyer didn't say anything about not being a bootleg, but refunded it anyway. So I guess Its always best to try. You never know.
Thank you all for your help.

I'm really glad to hear you were able to get your money refunded and everything. I'm more willing to buy off of Ebay than Amazon stores, personally. Some people decry Ebay as a safe haven of bootlegs, but if you do know what you're looking for, and require that a description have every piece of that information in it before you bid/buy, you can end up with what you want. Although, I only do that for boxsets that I can't find at my favorite retailers (Right Stuf, Anime Depot, Anime Nation)--specifically, I was trying to get my hands on Sailor Moon since it's out of print.

For Amazon stores, it's just very easy for someone to pretend it's the real item even more than elsewhere. And at least with Sailor Moon stuff, they're selling for retail rather than bootleg price, which hurts one of the identification features.

Good luck in future shopping endeavors. If you're going to shop online a lot, I recommend getting on Right Stuf's mailing list. The weekly specials can be good, and their other specials are pretty great. Moreover, a Got Anime membership is often beneficial (it paid for itself with our second purchase.)
