Okay, probably another stupid question, but...What is the purpose of the white bandages I've seen on people in anime. The character usually is NOT wounded. On the guys, the bandages start just below the rib cage and on the girls, they start just above the breasts. The person wearing the bandages are usually tough/strong people about to get into some sort of fight. Is the purpose of the bandages to show that they are tough?
The anime I've ssen this in has been Tenjho Tenge, Yu Yu Hakusho & Sakura Wars (the episode where the group are shooting various movie scenes and Sakura is sitting talking to group of people.) This question got into my head last night Thanks! |

I should probably talk to my brother about this before replying, he got his degree in sports medicine. But...
Just a guess here, but to alleviate the damage of cracked, broken ribs. But American docs don't do anything for broken ribs, trust me I know this from on on the job accident. The purpose was to limit the motion of the ribs in question, with the hope of preventing further injuring the same tissues. But, it has been found that the risks of contracting pneumonia increase as the ribs are not allowed to perform their normal function, at least that is what my doctor told me. Do this, instead of putting on boxing gloves, or booties for the feet, etc. Unless this is a holdout from the days of yore. Where you would hope to deflect a knife edge. OT Your location looks familiar! |

That's back from the Edo period of Japan. I think it was to cover up the "nakedness" of people back in those days (I don't know what the defintion of nudity was in Edo Japan). It might also be like a corsett.

2 tru...It may be a "cliche", but it worked. And at that time period they had to make use of what they had at that time. I dont know if it applies with nowadays...either way it still works.(I know that really doesn't help answer the reason why most anime's use the cliche' giant, white bandages). OOOhh well....

I've noticed that as well; it's definitely a japanese culture thing, not so much an anime cliche.

I was just to say the exact same thing. It's not an anime cliche, it's pretty much a cultural thing. I'll talk with my friend from Japan to see what he thinks about it. |

I have a small hunch that the "bandages" are a form of haramaki...but I'm not too sure if that is the correct term. It's just that I wasn't successful in digging up an image with a caption confirming that.

I Googled haramaki and came up with this: http://www.iz2.or.jp/english/fukusyoku/busou/15.htm Is this what you are refering to? Thanks everyone for your replies so far, but I'm still curious |

Well I'm a martial artist and I wear these kinds of things quite often, if I am doing work on pads I'll wrap my knuckles and elbows, it doesnt lower the impact to any noticable degree but it does prevent bruising and cuts caused by the work. Perhaps its a similar thing here?

I think that's the exact same reason why anime characters have them as well. Also, I do believe girls use it to server the same purpose that corsets did. |

In the case of anime females wearing them, I'd agree with stupidman007; for instance, Motoko from Love Hina uses them to keep her breasts under control (during fights and in general) and as a "supression" of her femininity.

They are also used, in anime, to give certain characters more visual flair.

So first, let me get this straight that you are NOT referring to the everyday bandages that we put on for a minor cut, but rather the ones that you can wrap around your body... am I right?
Like stated before, it's like what Motoko wears under her clothes in Love Hina. I've seen many anime where this is done. I believe I also saw Fuu from Samurai Champloo sport the wrap in an episode. It reminds me of what boxers do when they wrap their hands, and sometimes in UFC when they also wrap their legs. The significanse of it though, I've always wondered myself. |

No. Not a band-aid for a scrapped knee, cut finger or a boo-boo. I haven't seen Love Hina but it does sound like the same thing. Sorry, I'd import an image but since I'm a bit of a computer loser Found a VERY slim example: The cover of Fullmetal Alchemist vol. 5 The Cost of Living with Scar on the cover. What I'm refering to looks sort of like that but without the shoulder part and seems to go below the pants. |
