Where did the anime stop? Have they gotten to the you know what chapter?

The anime never stopped, this is just some OVA/special it sounds like.
Certain popular character? Naruto-wise all I can think of is Rock Lee since he gets pimped out in these kinds of things a lot. |

Naruto being the "certain popular character" in his own anime would be a bit ridiculous so I'd go with 1) Sasuke, 2) 4th Hokage, 3) Kakashi, 4) Itachi, 5) Free Space |

I'm inclined to think the character is someone who's dead considering the choice to describe it as "unbelievable appearance" ruling out fan favorites that are alive and more or less are already exploited to the max like Rock Lee (guy has his own spin off for cripes sake, I think we've seen enough of him). My money is on Jiraiya only because I feel like Minato and Kushina have been shown over and over at this point that there isn't really anything all that special about them anymore. Ditto on Itachi, that whole Uchina clan has been overdone. I'll laugh if it turns out to be Sasuke, there's nothing special or unbelievable about him showing up anymore. I guess it could be the third, but he's not really all that populare imo, but who knows.

Perhaps Haku. I recall reading somewhere at some point, that Haku was pretty popular. That could be crazy old though.

My thoughts are ether the 4th or Jiraiya in some sort of flash back. I do worry that the words "unbelievable appearance" build up for an unbelievable let down... We will wait and see.
