I'm a big fan of shows like Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, etc., and was wondering if there were any good anime that are similar. The closest thing I've seen is episode of 11 of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, The Day Of Sagittarius. Big space battles between ships (preferably not mechs) are what I'm mainly looking for, but with good characters and plot as well.
The name I hear thrown about most is Crest/Banner of the Stars, so I'd like anybodys opinion on that, or any others you'd recommend. |

Zaraki, if you're into series like Star Trek, Babylon 5, etc. pick up Crest/Banner immediately. It's an absolutely great space opera that definitely belongs in that tradition. The only thing I'll say is that it's more character than action driven. The relationship between the two leads is wonderful too.

Yes, Crest/Banner of the Stars (there's three successive series to the storyline so far, starting with Crest and then Banner I and Banner II, for a total of 36 normal episodes and one bonus ep on the very last DVD) is probably the closest thing. It's a strongly character-centered space opera which gets highly tactical as well as spinning a good story about two people from different races who gradually become the closest of friends. The cover art makes it look like "elves in space," but it does the best universe-building job of any anime sci-fi series I've ever seen and well-establishes the Abh race at the center of it. Its weaknesses are a tendency to stray off into needlessly heavy focus on side characters (especially in the last series) and an English dub that even many dedicated dub fans acknowledge as being bad.
ADDITIONAL NOTE: Crest/Banner of the Stars is based on a series of novels which shortly will (finally!) start being available in translated form in the States. If you like more hard-science tactically-oriented space sci-fi then Starship Operators is a safe bet. If an "academy days/coming of age" story set in space that also involves "save the planet" themes sounds interesting then check out Stellvia. Yeah, it looks cutesy, but there's some surprisingly good dramatic content in it and it's one of the rare anime series which captures the forward-looking view of series like the original Star Trek. And of course there's also Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, the iconic early-'80s series which was part of the source material for Robotech. It's got full-blown space drama and romantic entanglements in addition to action content. Definitely looks dated, but a nice, redubbed rerelease is currently being released. |

Trinity Blood: Much like the shows you mentioned, it has ships, futuristic structures, etc. It's a good show so you should check it out.
Last Exile: The show is great. it has stuff like ships, technology, mechs, and other stuff you would see in Battlestar Galactica |

I highly recommend - Elfen Lied - Best anime sci-fiction I've ever since, for more info visit anime#4148
EDIT: I just noticed you can't make recommendation posts. You can search animes on your own if you want, just pick the one with a good rating a a good plot.. |

Sorry, but I'm still under orders to lock recommendation threads. If anyone would like to reply to the topic, please send them via PM. And yes, I'd definitely recommend the Crest/Banner series. One of my faves. Go to my My Anime to read my comments.
